The Fury of Firestorm #19 Review
Overview:
Firestorm has to fight a whole team of villains while protecting Ronnie’s mom.
The Good:
The story was pretty good. It was action packed and had a suitable amount of dialogue and story as well. Seeing Firestorm fight enemies that are not other Firestorms is a nice change of pace. The enemies he fights are mostly obscure (or new, I am not sure) and they are diverse enough to give him a run for his money without dumbing Firestorm down. The side story with Tonya and Jason’s father is a nice touch as they make the point that Firestorm is one of the most powerful people in the world but has little experience and a high school mentality. It was a nice touch because so much of the first meta-arc focused on power but had little interaction from other heroes.
Dan Jurgens writes the issue and does a good job balancing action and story. He also does a great job at showing Firestorm’s inexperience when fighting multiple enemies.
Jurgens also draws the issue and it is able to capture the fight very well.
I wonder if Killer Frost is one of the mercenaries from earlier in the series because the last we saw of the mercenary, she was in a hospital room covered in ice. She didn’t act like it but still, it would be nice to see some bridge between the first and second half of the series.
The Bad:
Nothing major is wrong with the issue. There is one odd plot hole that bugged me but for the sake of spoilers I won’t talk about.
Related to that plot hole there is no real sense of urgency coming from Firestorm. While he does get angry once or twice, he has a very laid back attitude for the situation he and Ronnie’s mom are in.
Verdict:
A solid issue is delivered by Dan Jurgens in both the writing and art departments. The series has one more issue and leaves a fairly large cliffhanger.
