The Fury of Firestorm #12 Review
Overview:
Jason and Ronnie work together to defeat Pozhar.
The Good:
The story is good but seemed rushed, almost like the series was going to end this issue (it isn’t) and there are some major revelations that are split me down the middle. The story itself is how Jason is ready to sacrifice himself to stop Scorn, the combination of Ronnie and Pozhar while Ronnie tries to stop him from the inside. This is fairly straight forward with the rest of the series because Jason has been the more heroic one of the pair but Ronnie, who early on was portrayed as a man of action is kind of a weakling here. Several characters die in this issue and the last page is all that kept me from hating it.
The dialogue by Joe Harris was good, even though the story was hard to follow, all of the characters were true to past issues and the talking was good but the thought bubbles come from nowhere.
The art by Yildiray Cinar and Daniel HDR is a major plus to the issue and the series as it is consistent between the two artists and very good at showing off all of the fire that the Firestorm’s give off.
The Bad:
Rakshasi died. The problem with this was that she was a unique character, even among the Firestorms as her appearance was different from the others and her personality seemed different as well, also the concept of an Indian superhero is fairly interesting. I am not a fan of character death and another person dies as well and it was only to prove a point to the reader that Jason already somehow knew.
During the issue, Jason comes to several conclusions involving Zithertech and the Firestorm Protocols that come from nowhere which brings into light the biggest problem facing the issue and the series lately: it seems like there is a missing issue in between 10 and 11 and several missing pages in this issue as well. All of this missing material ties in with the conclusion that Jason comes to involving someone important and the protocols that I am split down the middle on, on one had the idea makes total sense but what that person does in the issue does not, it seems unnecessary. (Comment if you want clarification about what I am talking about!!!).
Along with the pacing, the other thing is that Jason and Ronnie constantly get whooped on by everyone, either one of them could go toe to toe with Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern or any other heavy hitter in the DCU and have a very reasonable shot at winning but here they are constantly loosing every fight or just not participating while the other Firestorms do things.
Verdict:
Great art and story potential is brought down by a too fast pace and several jumps in logic that is hard to follow wrap up this storyline. With the death of several characters and an ambiguous fate for Ronnie, Jason and Firehawk, the series has potential but it needs to be more controlled
