    After the events of Second Coming, the return of Mutant Messiah Hope Summers re-initiated the Mutant Gene. Five lights appeared on Cerebra for the first time since House of M but these five new mutants are unlike any mutants the X-Men have ever seen.

    I know that the story arc is only two issues in, but the characters seem like very poor imitations of former characters or just very one dimensional. I know Im being harsh, but so far we have Laurie, blue with red hair and looks like Mystique. Gabriel is a speedster, wow, thats new.  
        
    And from the images relesed of the other three, none seem really that intriguing. Girl that has elemental powers, or atleast fire and ice, seems like Tempest/Angel Salvadore. The Brute looks an awful lot like Sabretooth. The only one that I can't place right of the bat is the bald disfigured one. But considering the team is being brought together by someone called a Jean rip off should this really be surprising? 
      
    Are we reaching a point where we just rehash the old characters in new wrapers and pretend they are original?

    The 5 lights have something hidden...
    It might seem like it's lacking yes but according to the November solicits... there's something that won't be revealed until Hope gets her own series Generation Hope #1

    Jordama people said the EXACT same thing that you just did about the NEW New Mutants.
     I dont agree 100%, but these are some things people said when these new mutants first appeared...
     People said...
     
    Wind Dancer = Lame Storm
    Wither= Crappy Rouge
    Prodigy= Rouge/ Synch
    Wallflower= Stacy X
    Elixer= ANY mutant who can heal others!
    Surge= Bolt/ Quicksilver 
    Hellion= Jean Grey
    Anole= Toad
    Mercury= Alex Mack
    Rockslide= a grey Thing
    Tag= THE ONLY ORIGINAL POWER!
     
     
    NOW that was back in 2004....  only 6 years later, look how far these supposed ripoff characters have come...
     
    Wind Dancer = So popular that when she was depowered she went onto the new warriors as a main character
    Wither= Selene.. NUFF SAID
    Prodigy= Depowered and STILL an X-Man, only one other person can say that (Dani)
    Wallflower= DEAD! EPIC!
    Elixer= KILLED WILLIAM STRYKER!
    Surge= yeah still lame, but still there.  
    Hellion= Though he never became a male version phoenix he is very powerful and a huge antagonist
    Anole= Hot, Cool, Gay, and in as may x-titles as he can be
    Mercury= Power Upgrade from just a puddle
    Rockslide=  Power Upgrade from just a grey Thing
    Tag= The only character that had a original power didn't make the cut... tear. 
     
    So before you go and trash these new mutants look back on other NEWBIES joing the fold, 
    and see how awesome they have become and how we care about them just
     as much as we care about the original five lights...

    Many good points, but I think a lot of that is due to the writing of Kyle and Yost. If they were handling the Generation Hope i would not have a doubt in my mind.

    @jordama:  true but im sure these 5 lights are going to be developed on a even more EPIC scale then the NEW new mutants. 
    they didnt call it the 198 Lights or 193859300 lights, its just 5 of them. i have faith. i highly doubt they just picked theses mutants
    out of a hat and said, lets run with this.

    This is exactly why I think they should stop creating fresh batches of muties every few years and give the others a chance to grow and change for the better. Lord knows we have enough characters! I'm sick of seeing so many of my favorites stuck in comic book limbo! lol

    John Wilkes Booth, all he did was kill a president. end of story. 
     
    would you have wanted to hear that he went on to kill more famous people and then become  ruler of a kingdom and then go to hell, then loose everything, get killed get brought back to life, kill 100's of people then realize he wants to be an x-man? no! thats why they have new batches... b/c new people are BORN every day... sometimes its good to retire characters. 
     
    AND YES I WAS MAKING FUN OF MUTANTS LIKE JEAN GREY. god i hate that bitch.

    @jordama: Honestly, I completely agree... but at the same time, this is a story by Matt Fraction.  So what were you expecting?   
     
    I've higher hopes (no pun intended) for Generation Hope.  Although it's a lame title, at least it's written by a decent character writer.  It's such a shame that we can't get Christos Gage or Dan Slott on an X-Book.

    I do agree that the characters don't exactly look brand new. But we are still in the beginning, things might change.

    In this day and age there are only 2 ways for new characters to go.  They either have familiar powersets, because lets be honest there are only so many decent ones out there, or they end up with an extremely off the wall ability (Maggot is the best example of this.)  FOr me it all comes down to the writing, if they are written well the power sets don't really matter.

    Wind Dancer= hasn't been seen since the New Warriors flop 
    Wither= Awesome story with Selene, but he is gone, atleast for a while. 
    Prodigy= completely under used, he should be leading X-Club, not getting their coffee. 
    Wallflower= Death was epic, but revived as a bio sentinel... 
    Elixir= Is most likely gone for awhile.  
    Surge= has changed into a complete B*tch. 
    Hellion: has gone back to a jerk. 
    Anole: Love Him, slightly overused. 
    Mercury: Deadpool story 
    Rockslide: Has become Anoles sidekick.
    Tag: No one really cares anymore 
     
    All the characters have gone backwords in development.

    When is Hope going to give Prodigy his powers back is my question. And will he ever get the respect he deserves? He should be the X-Man version of Batman...

    I HONESTLY THINK EVERYONE NEED TO SHUT THE _____ UP!  UNLESS YOU CAN COME UP WITH POWERS THAT ONE OTHER SUPERHERO IS NOT GONNA HAVE (IMPOSSIBLE). THEN I REPEAT. SHUT THE HECK UP.

    Well, i don't give a dingle-berry what they're hiding. This whole thing sucks. I despise this 5-member-team formula that seems so popular with the X-Men. I understand if teams are arranged for specific purposes i.e. recon, stealth, front-line assault......but these 5 lights just naturally fulfill a well-rounded selection? Ugh, Fraction, seriously go back to iron Man and never come back. Leave my mutants alone.

    Agree they are not that original BUT Gabriel is not a speedster, he manipulates time ;-)

    Besides him, all the other characters reflect the original X-Men

    @Thainan Draconia: keep in mind that i wrote this a year ago before the generation hope book even came out so I was working off the information that Fraction had provided. I know a lot more about the lights now ;)

    @Mutant God: Again the blog is from before that was known. It was the perspective right after they started appearing in Uncanny.
