Aragorn volunteered to join the Fellowship to rid the world of Sauron who had all but destroyed Aragorn's once great race, the Numonoreans.
Boromir represented Gondor in the Fellowship.
Frodo and his quest to destroy the One Ring were the main reasons for the creation of the Fellowship.
Gandalf was the main person responsible for the Fellowship. He gave his life to save the others and let them continue the quest but was revived by that Valar so he could join them once more.
When Gimli joined the Fellowship it was in the hope that the death of Sauron would allow the dwarfs to regain the Mines of Moria which had been over run by goblins. He represented Dwarfs in the alliance against Mordor.
Legolas decided to join the Fellowship to represent the Elves in the fight against Sauron.
Merry decided to join the Fellowship so as to help Frodo, one of his best friends. When the Fellowship was split he was taken by Uruk-Hai with Pippin.
Pippin joined the Fellowship in order to help his friend Frodo complete his quest to destroy the One Ring. For a long time Merry and Pippin were separated from the Fellowship after being captured by Uruk-Hai. They only met Frodo and Sam again after Sauron and the Ring were destroyed.
Sam saw the Fellowship as the best way to help his best friend Frodo. They remained together throughout the whole journey despite the different paths of many members, albeit Sam followed secretly when Golumn turned Frodo against Sam.
