i've often wondered this and thought i'd finally bring it out for everyone to answer...

it's not an easy question to answer as it had many possible answers but none of them fit completely...

The Doctor has always travveled with a companion, Human, Alien, Time Lord, Robotic or otherwise... but the main question is why...

why does he need someone?

you'll note that he is very rarely, if ever, alone...

he's stated several times that he needs someone... but needs them for what?

Martha said it was because he was lonely... that i can understand, he's over 900 years old and watched his family, his friends, his entire planet turn to dust and crumble in the time war...

Donna said it was to hold him back... again, that i can understand... when he didn't have a companion he is very deadly and has exterminated several alien species completely if noone is there to help him with the better angels of his nature...

Jack said it was to show someone else the universe through his eyes... that i can sort of understand... He's seen so much, done so much... to see it all through fresh eyes would be a pleasure after seeing the entirity of time and space...

Rose never answered the question... but several other companions have, always giving different answers...

But asisde from the obvious I think the doctor needs a companion  also cause it shows how humans cant live without each other, it demonstrates our desires and drives to never be alone!

god im smart in this character as well

yeah, but neither The Doctor, nor a lot of his companions have been human...

some have been alien, android or any number of different things...

i agree the The Doctor just doesn't want to be alone, he's dangerous when he's alone lol

I would say he is much like Capt Jack... or even Capt Kirk..... he goes with his feelings rather than his head.....

I mean we have seen that he was in love with Rose.. or at least it was HEAVILY implied....

it was implied he was in love with Rose...

it was also implied he was in love with Grace...

also implied he was in love with Romana...

he goes through women quickly lol

I think its a mix of different things, but lets point out the last two before Donna.

Martha she became a companion in my eyes because he was truly lonely after Rose. He gave his heart to her and it was never meant to be, leaving her at Badwolf was the last for him emotionally. He realized that being alive for 900+ years that if he is to continue going on he needs someone their with him. She later became more to him though as he has refered to during Donnas run as companion, and others have pointed out that he didnt want another companion that he would come to love. Which is why he was so reluctant with Donna. Theirs loneliness

With Rose I think it was mostly to show the universe to her With chris that is.  The ninth doctor was real distant in his emotions almost shutting them off in some episodes but he did show on many occasions that he did care for rose. BUT i think at that time he just wanted to show the worlds to Rose. Then David (tenth) came and I almost think a complete change on his entire emotions (if that sounds stupid ill elaberate) his emotions were almost heightened during his time in this regeneration with Rose. I feel that it was both wanting to show her the worlds and his lonlieness too.

this was further explained in the last episode where you saw the clone doctor (I'll call him 10.5 for now), where The Doctor realised that 10.5 was born in blood, war and fire... much like 9 had been when he regenerated from 8 in the middle of the time war...

Rose made him a better person so 10 could share his emotions again...

i've covered about 200 years of The Doctor now, only another 700 to go, along with Technology and other stuff...
