I'm hearing Paterson Joseph.  Nothing's been confirmed as far as I know.

Very interesting.  He's already appeared in the Bad Wolf episode but so what.

    Anyone else have other info?

I thought David Tennant was still signed on until at least season 5 (not counting all the specials next year as a season)

Season 5 starts (over there) this Christmas (natch).  So we should get it hopefully around March or April.  I still have to watch season 4.  I like to take my time and stretch them out.  That and wait for my wife to be in the mood to watch it.  She likes the show but is not a sci-fi fan.  She likes Doctor Who but gets a little burnt if there's too many cheesey alien episodes.

    hmmm....

this is a bit strange as it goes against what i have heard...

from what i know, David Tennent has signed up for season 5 (which will be airing 2010) along with the four specials that will be aired in 2009... the two major storylines being the "Time War" and the "7 Doctors" (Currently being filmed)

An insider at the BBC said: "It's a pretty ambitious idea and it's still being finalised. Everything is being kept under wraps but Doctor Who fans are in for a big treat."
The first of the 10 actors to take the role was William Hartnell in 1963, followed three years later by Patrick Troughton and then by Jon Pertwee but all three have since died.
The seven survivors include Tom Baker, now best known as the voice of the comedy series Little Britain, who played the role for seven years from 1974.
He was followed by Peter Davidson from 1981 to 1984, whose daughter Georgia Moffett has also featured in the programme and who is now dating the current doctor, David Tennant.
The others are Colin Baker, from 1984 to 1986, Sylvester McCoy who had two stints from 1987 to 1989 and re-appeared in the role in 1996, Paul McGann, who took over the role in 1996 and Christopher Eccleston who reprised the series in 2005.

After 2010 The Doctor's regeneration is anyone's guess... i would actually welcome a black Doctor as long as they did it properly and not just because they 'needed' to have one of the Doctor's to be black to fit in with the current levels of political correctness... if that was the case then we still need an asian Doctor, a chinese Doctor, an Aarian Doctor... and so on...

but my personal choice would be Tony Head for the role...

i could see him being a kick ass Doctor, after the manic Tennent in the role it would be nice to see a calmer side to The Doctor, a big like a change from 6 (Colin Baker) to 7 (Sylvester McCoy)

    What I read:

Neil Gaiman to write 2010 “Doctor Who” and Tom Baker returning to the series proper in an unnamed role.

The sixth series of "Doctor Who" (2011) will star Paterson Joseph as The Doctor.

It's just a strong rumor (or should I say rumour?)  I still say it'd be interesting.

at the moment it appears to just be a rumour... i've been searching about and can't find anything concrete about it...

the best i can find is this quote from CBR..,

An actor that we have seen on the new Doctor Who (who HASN’T been on the program by now? The guy who played Neal the hippie from the Young Ones??), Neverwhere (for you Gaiman fans… and no one else) and the excellent Jekyll, Hyperdrive and Peep Show, you could definitely be hard pressed to do better than Paterson Joseph for a Doctor #11.

An actor raised on the stage yet equally capable of delivering a quality performance on the CRT (HD), Joseph carries with him the kind of character and other-worldly austerity that make him an ideal choice to bring Doctor Who back to its roots. Rich Johnson said that Joseph had a kind of ‘Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee)’ thing going on and that is certainly true if you squint a bit. A showman and entertainer, Joseph is also an actor with authority which the character so desperately needs… and he has a voice that purrrss… doesn’t he?

Oh yeah, and he is black too.

The idea of casting an actor of color has riled fans in the past but I think that it may finally be time to let that demon go and accept the fact that such a thing can and should happen. Eccleston’s street-cred Doctor appealed to a group of viewers never before catered to by Doctor Who (and consequently made the show ‘cool’ for the first time in roughly 30 years). The casting of Paterson Joseph could likewise attract an audience that never saw themselves in the shoes of this Timelord… and that cannot be a bad thing.

That’s right, I’m talking about bald guys.

I've e-mailed all my friends on Gallifrey.com to find out more about this rumour but as it stands i think it's just a rumor as the producers are still promising another 5 year contract to Tennant... he may be the 'backup' Doctor if Tennent has to leave for any reason, or the rumour might just have been misconstrued at the start at he'll be playing another Time Lord when Gallifrey returns next year...

Current bookie favourite would be David Morrissey, star of Blackpool and The Deal, in which he played Gordon Brown. He's set to appear in the next Christmas special of Who, which is conveniently entitled The Next Doctor.

He'll certainly be dressing the part.
