Great news for those of us that live in the United States. BBC America has announced today that they've acquired the rights to air five new specials from Doctor Who. The channel will get the exclusive first window to the Doctor Who 2009 specials and the final four adventures of the David Tennant Doctor. With this deal, BBC America has also acquired the 2008 Christmas Special, "The Next Doctor" featuring David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan. It will air on Saturday, June 27, 2009. (I better set my DVR).
The first of the 2009 Specials, "Doctor Who: Planet Of The Dead," premieres in July.
As a London red bus takes a detour to an alien world it forces the Doctor (Tennant) to work with the extraordinary Lady Christina (Michelle Ryan, Bionic Woman). But the mysterious planet holds terrifying secrets hidden in the sand and time is running out as the deadly Swarm gets closer.
"Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars" is the second special. That and two additional, untitled specials will premiere later in 2009 and early 2010. A Doctor Who Blu-ray for "Planet of the Dead" will be released shortly after the U.S. broadcast premiere.
It's so good to hear about all these projects. For those that have seen them already, (without spoilers) how great were they? Looks like bad news for the Sci-Fi (or SyFy) Channel. Maybe they lost Doctor Who because they decided to change the name of their channel.
