Mandy Flynn, a 19-century London prostitute, happens upon an alien, Bozz, who is "shipwrecked" on Earth and wants to kill himself out of despondency. Instead they join up to improve both their lives and become Boswell & Flynn, Consulting Detectives.
In their first case, they find out about Lord Giles Morgan, who seems to be immortal, having been declared dead multiple times in the past. A mysterious string of deaths by what seem to be targeted lightning strikes also seems to be connected.
Using a combination of Mandy's street moxie and Bozz's alien abilities, they find the source of the electrical disturbances: a strange machine, built by the mad scientist Dr. Pretorius, who was financed by the Hand of Four. The Hand of Four, a group of plutocrats, are using Lord Morgan to try to take over the government. In turn, they are giving him eternal life through the machine's many powers. They capture Bozz with the electrical machine's stasis field. Mandy escapes and returns with Salem Hawkshaw, an American cowboy and boxer she found on the street. Luckily he loves to mix it up, and together they manage to rescue Bozz and defeat the Hand of Four.
Salem joins the detective team, but they have also caught the eye of Inspector Fitzroy of Scotland Yard, who takes notice of their unusual interests.
