@sora_thekey: I think the only record Hunger Games broke was best box office by a non-sequel. The Avengers have been breaking records that were being held by movies such as TDK and Avatar.

    No. It won't.

Despite my dislike of everything to do with Joss Whedon I wanted to see this. But it seems the universe decided I should not. Soon after it was released in the UK I made arrangments to go and see it, only for work problems to scupper that. So a week later my friend and I went for an early showing (1040) only to discover the cinema not open. Then... well, you get the picture. I'm just going to wait for the DVD now. Bit of a disapointment because I was really looking forward to the Avengers on the big screen

Next film I'm going to make an effort and see is Prometheus. Spiderman and Batman are out, zero interest in them.

This movie was as great as they said it was going to be, and it was better. That said, I don't think the Dark Knight Rises(is that how you spell that?) is going to be as good as the Avengers.

    Avengers

+ 1 billion marketing budget (aside from Iron Man, the prequels = just really expensive ads)

    + regular+3D+IMAX+IMAX3D+4D+etc. tickets

+ bright & fun, appeals to families & internationally

    TDKR

    + Nolan & Batman = free advertising

    - could've recast Joker for profit, but didn't, out of respect

    - only regular + IMAX (by which he risked the anger of the studio execs)

    - dark, scary to kids

I respect Nolan cause he's got balls going against every blockbuster rule to make the film he wants

Usually I'd agree w/ this sentiment, Harry Potter, Avatar and Alice In Wonderland are prime examples of how higher prices and 3D screen prices could mean a movie can make more but not sell more seats.

But, some articles will actually break down the NUMBER OF TICKETS SOLD data as well, and Avengers blew that record away.

From one article I read, for an opening weekend, the record for # of tickets sold was tied between Spider-man 3 and The Dark Knight at an estimated average of 22 million tickets. The Avengers' opening weekend, the estimated average of tickets sold was 26 million.

Let me say i Loved this movie. I love the dark knight when it was released. But i dont think TDKR will raise more money than the Avengers. Because they are two different types of films, and avengers is more open audience type of movie, while the dark knight is more of a cerebral film and we all know most causal moviegoers like to be entertained. Causing most people to go see it only one time. My old parents seen Avengers twice but still haven't seen the dark knight. I love anything comics but i dont think TDKR will sell more

I agree... The Batman series is more dark and parents won't take their kids to see it like they have with The Avengers. I know a lot of parents that have seen it twice because the wanted to see it before they took their kids. Batman will still be awesome!

@venomoushatred1001: Spider-Man 3 was the third movie...Avengers is the 6th MARVEL movie...I think it would have went to their head already as all of the MARVEL movies have been a success and Avengers has made history. Also, Spider-Man's problem was Avi Arad and the studio getting involved. Personally, I think the Spider-Man movies are all kind of terrible and 3 is just the worst.

@VinceNotVance: Maybe. Avengers has the benefit of having a decent 3D showing on top of IMAX showings. That helps boost the sales too as sometimes 3D can make sales worse.

Actually, I bet the opposite will happen. Avengers, I would argue is less open-type, as its target market is kids and males, while with TDKR more people are open to see a cerebral film, while kids will still go, because, well, Batman.

Great movie that totally deserves the success it's gotten. Its set the bar pretty high, I just hope this isn't what pops the comic book movie bubble where it's all downhill from here.
