Everyone's talking about The Avengers. Last week we saw it successfully smashed box office opening records with a $207.4 million opening weekend, the biggest domestic debut of all time. Tickets sales haven't slowed down too much as it's expected to cross the $1 billion threshold at the global box office on May 13, its 19th day in release. As one of only 12 films in history to gross $1 billion, it joins Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on Disney’s list of billion-dollar films.

Everyone's happy including Robert Iger, Disney's Chairman and CEO. He's stated that the franchise will continue with "great stories and compelling characters for years to come."

So obviously we will be seeing more:

On May 8, Disney announced that a sequel to Marvel’s The Avengers was in development, following last month’s announcement that a follow-up to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger will be released April 4, 2014. A sequel to last summer’s Thor is scheduled for release November 15, 2013, and the third installment of the hit Iron Man series, which has earned over $1.2 billion worldwide, will arrive in theaters May 3, 2013.

Let's hope we get an official release date for The Avengers 2 soon.

Awesome! I'm happy to see that they mentioned Iron Man 3 as the third film in the "franchise" and not the trilogy.

Definitely eating my words right now. Said that Avengers wouldn't even make more money in America than Hunger Games. Couldn't have been more wrong. Congrats to them. How high is the ceiling for this one though? $1.6 billion worldwide? Dark Knight probably won't be able to touch that but I think it'll still be a close match in America, at least.

Yes, unfortunately enough. Burton + Depp + recognizable property + first big 3D movie post-Avatar= lowered standards/ $1 Billion in ticket sales.

Thats so great. If Marvel knew what was good for them they would hire back Joss Whedon as the director of the sequel fast before his price went up.

I'm actually seeing Avengers film to become the third highest grossing film of all time, just behind Avatar and Titanic.

Sidenote: I read an article (and can't remember where) that said that Marvel claims they won't use Hulk for anything other than a member of the Avengers in the Avengers movies from now on. Which kinda sucks.

Oh yeah, a movie that's the sequel to what is hailed as one of the best movies of all time and as a candidate for the best comic book movie of all time isn't going to break $1 billion in box office revenue...yeah, I can definitely see the logic in that.
