As we draw nearer to the release of Marvel's The Avengers movie we learn more and more about the film's script, premise, villains and what comics actually inspired the story we'll see play out on the big screen on May 4th, 2012. Two recently released TV spots gave us some clues at what to expect and reaffirms some of what we already knew.
For starters, we knew that Loki would be heading the cast of villains in the upcoming film; but we didn't know who those villains were and what they would look like. The Avengers "Head Count" TV spot is the latest look at Loki's "army" that will be featured in the upcoming film, and they are not a very good looking bunch. Check out the look at the villain about 23 seconds into the clip.
Back in January we reported that the film's Producer Kevin Feige discussed in EMPIRE that the Skrulls would not be appearing in 'The Avengers' and that the "bad guys" would be beings from "one of the other nine realms." If they aren't Skrulls, who could they be? The folks at Splash Page took a look at the clip and pointed out that the bad guy does resemble another character that already exists in the Marvel universe who also happens to have some relationship to Thor. Could it be that the close up shot we get of "Loki's army" is actually from Beta Ray Bill's world? Beta Ray Bill is one of the few worthy enough to have weilded Mjolnir? They certain do bear a resemblance. Last we checked, though, Beta Ray Bill was never an inherently evil guy.
Plenty of other information has been unveiled on different outlets throughout the web including details about the film's script and the extent of the relationships and interactions we'll see play out between the Avengers characters. For example, we already knew that a lot of what we've seen in the Marvel movies so far has been inspired by the Ultimates line of books, but what we may not have realized is that the script is also inspired by Marvel's recent Civil War story arc.
We know we'll see plenty of action, but will there be romance? If you read Marvel comics and happen to know anything about the Black Widow then you're already aware of her relationship history. So what are the chances we'll be seeing a romance bloom between Black Widow and one of her teammates in the upcoming film? According to actress Scarlet Johansson who plays the Black Widow in the movie, not very likely.
Black Widow and Hawkeye have a history together, having fought a lot together and worked with each other for years as agents of SHIELD. When asked if we see the characters in a romantic situation, Scarlett Johansson quipped 'There’s no time for romance, we have shit to Avenge.'
Somehow, we're not so sure we believe her. In addition to all of that, Whedon also revealed that he will be re-introducing the characters to audiences, making the film very accessible in case you haven't seen all of the Marvel movies thus far. Oh and if you've been waiting to catch a glimpse of the Hulk "raging," then you are in for a real treat. Check out the video below for that as well as a look at the SHIELD Hellicarrier that is set to appear in the film.
