Some iconic covers really deserve their place in Marvel history and here's one that stands up nearly 45 years after it was first drafted.  'King' Kirby is the man responsible naturally and, wow, that image of Cap is really stunning, isn't it?  Cap's expression seems urgent, even fierce - he appears to be the one issuing a battle cry to the others, despite being the new kid on the block.  I love the angle of the cover too - it helps give it a sense of urgency, like you're a passerby just turning round, perhaps having heard the dramatic call to arms - "Avengers Assemble."  A terrific cover, very Kirby and very good.

No wonder it's a Marvel classic

This issue has it all. The return of a famous superhero, the world's greatest team against Namor, and the death of Bucky Barnes. The one bit in this issue I don't like is the part where an alien turns the Avengers to stone; I really don't like it when they add aliens or robots to issues that they're out of place in. Apart from that minor  flaw, this is a classic. The cover has a brilliant picture  of the Avengers, all ready for action and prepared to fight  for justice.  The style is just great, without having to add any unnecessary  speech bubbles or captions explaining why you should by this issue. Classic. Thats the only word you need.
