The Amazing Spider-Man # 2 - Duel to the Death with the Vulture and The Uncanny Threat of the Terrible Tinkerer
is an issue published by Marvel that was released on 5 / / 1963Plot Summary
"Duel to the Death with the Vulture"
A new criminal dressed as a vulture has been terrorizing New York City. J. Jonah Jameson wants pictures for an article he's publishing in NOW magazine. Peter decides that if he can take pictures of the Vultures, he could sell them to JJJ to help out his Aunt May.
The Vulture decides to next rob the Park Avenue Jewelry Exchange when Spider-Man sees him. He starts taking pictures but is spotted by the Vulture. They fight briefly before the Vulture flies away.
Peter takes his pictures to Jameson who is impressed by the photos. The Vulture tries to trick everyone by attempting to rob the Jewelry Exchange from below rather than above (as people would expect). Spider-Man's spider-sense goes off and he's able to capture the Vulture. Having more photos of the Vulture and the fight with Spider-Man, Peter is able to sell them and earn more money for Aunt May and himself.
"The Uncanny Threat of the Terrible Tinkerer"
Peter's teacher recommends him to be a science assistant to Professor Cobwell. Peter is sent to the Tinkerer Repair Shop for the Professor. His spider-sense detects a weird trace of radiation at the shop and from the radio he picked up. It turned out that some alleged extraterrestrials have been placing spy devices into radios to discover Earth's weaknesses.
Spider-Man returns to the shop and sneaks into the basement. He discovers a bunch of "aliens" and they fight. He manages to get the upper hand and they all flee in a large "spaceship."

Duel to the Death with the Vulture and The Uncanny Threat of the Terrible Tinkerer
Seriously, I never understood why the vulture was not one of those villains who just went away. As villains goes, his look is one of a very old and frail man, and why is it that just because he has wings he can take a punch from a man who can lift 10 tons ( according to the Marvel Universe handbook ) ? I understand comics were not as mature as they are today. Back then they were still seen as something only kids read, on that level the two stories here work pretty good. The way the vulture story is written, Spiderman has to beat the Vulture using his brains instead of ALL the other powers he could use on a man whose sole power is a winged suit. The Tinkerer story, that is just filler. Really another villain who lasted seemingly because he was one of the first villains. This isn't a bad comic, it's just that I would expect better.
Duel to the Death with the Vulture and The Uncanny Threat of the Terrible Tinkerer
Another two story issue for Spider-Man's second issue both featuring the introduction of a new villain that will both play a major role in Spider-Man's history. "The Vulture" has had more of an impact on Spider-Man's life and will soon become of his greatest foes, than the "Terrible Tinkerer" who i kind of dislike, but both are very important characters.
The first story begins as The Vulture swoops around the city stealing valuables in an easy fashion. This is where Peter first gets the idea getting money by attaching a camera to his costume and snapping pics of the Vulture. The second story introduces a character that historically has been a more of a "behind the scenes" type of villain. This part created some questions left unanswered for a number of years and also introduces a major Spider-Man villain without any of the readers actually knowing it! With him the Tinkerer has some strange visitors which are aliens that work for him, they insert some special devices into radios.
The Vulture is next seen soon in Amazing Spider-Man #7 and many more times after that becoming a top ten Spider-Man villain. The Tinkerer on the other hand does not make another major appearance until Amazing Spider-Man #160, but does make several contributions to Spider-Man's rogues gallery of villains by helping them in a big way. The unnamed aliens do not appear again until years later in Spectacular Spider-Man #50 & #51. This is another issue i feel that is important in the series.
