Is it wrong I've collected a few store variants of ASM 666?
I am a sucker for novelty, what can I say? I currently have three variants of this comic, two store variants and the FanExpo cover. Finally getting to reading it is what took me a while and I really have no defense except, it is a Spider-man review from me, late or not be glad this won't be a hate review.
There is one thing about Spider-man that will forever be my love hate with the character and it is its level or writing. Spider-man is a character that reminds me of the childish roots "Comics" come from, a time when they were called funny books for a reason. Spider-man is escapism at its best and that is why love hate. Spider-man is needed because it is one of the most accessible series out, but it also turns away connoisseurs like me because the writing never tantalizes the depths of the medium in ways indie and experimental books do.
With Spider-Man being accessible, I can be honest and tell you all you needed to read before this issues to understand what is happening is the Free Comic Book Day issue, to tell you Pete lost his Spider Sense and he has to train to be a better fighter. The rest of the book is a set up to Spider Island.
The pacing was fun and the story-telling was clear. The art was good and there were moments I really enjoyed the panel work.
Overall, Marvel did a good job with this issue. From its marketing stand point, it got me to buy the book more then once and I don't regret it.
Cheers
