omertalvendetta's The Amazing Spider-Man #663 - The Return of Anti-Venom, Part 1: The Ghost of Jean Dewolff; Infested Stage 4: Out of Nowhere; Thanks... But No Thanks review

First Publication.

Cover:

This is a much, much better cover than last one, even if it shows Anti-Venom a little spiny.  It looks like it was drawn by Caselli, though it could've been Camuncoli.  Regardless, it looks great.

The Good:

It's really cool to continue to see Parker in great situations for once.  The point is driven home that he is pretty much beyond busy in this period of time in his life, with a successful job, a girlfriend, and his adventures as Spidey in both teams of Avengers and the FF.  A little hard to believe that he even sleeps at all.  What I do like in this issue is the honesty and an event that as a fellow scientist, I can say it's an awesome achievement.  In addition, I really like seeing a new villain (new for me; I know he's been around way before this issue) and seeing the Wraith in action.  It will be interesting to see how this all pans out next issue.

The Bad:

There wasn't much that I disliked, except maybe the corniness behind Anti-Venom's lines.  As a reader that has never gotten a chance to read Brock prior to this issue, was he always this corny?  Obviously, this would be a writer's fault and not the character; I just couldn't help but laugh at some of his lines.  That doesn't bother me too much; what does bother me is the constant rehash of Aunt May being in trouble yet again.  I think her death is long overdue.

Overall:

I was happy to have Slott back at the helm.  I do not mind Gage, as he's doing a great job over at Avengers Academy, but it was nice to see Dan writing Spider-Man again.  Good story, and the backup stories are actually relevant this time around.  I cannot wait to see what will happen next couple of issues.

Eddie Brock has always been corny, and he enjoys it. He acts scary, but really he's just a bit of a goof, still a freakish and dangerous one, though. (for example: Anti-Venom. He probably thinks its the coolest name in the world, and he has no idea why ANYONE would think its lame; ETC.)
