Changes in the Wind
Part of CV's Top 100 Spider-Man Universe Stories - reviewed!
Issue 28 would at first glance seem to be just another issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. Peter Parker goes to the scientist Smythe's to retrieve his Spider-Man costume. While there, there is (predictably) a laboratory accident. This results in the creation of the Molten Man.
The Molten Man storms off and destroys a car in the process. Spider-Man goes to bring him in and the two get into a long, multi-page battle. This seems to be Steve Ditko trying to emulate Jack Kirby's style, complete with 'THAK!'s, 'CLOP!'s and 'BYOINK!'s.
So, pretty standard stuff. It's also got some of the standard weaknesses of early Spider-Man comics - some dubious uses of the web shooters, some editorial mistakes (Liz Allan is referred to as 'Liz Hilton' at one point), etc.
However, there are two notable things that happen in the last few pages. One is the Midtown High School graduation, where it is announced that both Flash and Peter have earned scholarships to Empire State University. Also, at the graduation ceremony, Liz Allan says goodbye to Peter Parker forever.
So, while it's pretty much an average story, it's a little noteworthy for Spidey fans.
