It's Magic!
I'm tired of comic books that treat all technology as if it were magic. Normally I expect a little of this from a Silver Age comic, but this one goes way, way beyond. So Peter Parker is still a super genius and whips up things like tracking devices on a moments notice. And his webs can of course do anything. In this issue for example he falls into the East River and then makes an 'air tight web helmet' to allow himself to breath underwater. I'm all for allowing Spider-Man to do a variety of things with his webs, but I draw the line at creating solid objects - particularly air tight ones - out of webs - webs by their very definition are the opposite of air tight. Then of course there is the total disregard of the photographer's profession that The Amazing Spider-Man comics often show. I don't care how good a photographer you are - you can't dangle your camera from a web and set it to automatic and get great pictures all from the perfect angle of a fight - you'd be lucky to get even one that catches a bit of the action in frame and not blurry.
But the real technology = magic stuff comes from Mysterio. Yes, I know it's all very amazing what Hollywood stuntmen and effects guys can do. They simply can't do the things Mysterio does. Page after page of this issue is filled with this kind of ridiculousness. Maybe you can stomach it, but it stretched my suspension of disbelief to the breaking point. Sad, given that this followed a great couple of issues with Doc Ock.
Here's hoping next issue will be better (and that Mysterio remains a thing of the past).
