One of the most influential and best-selling manga artists of all time, he is best known for Hokuto no Ken and Hana no Keiji (though both were written by someone else for their original run) and in modern times for successfully extending his franchises exponentially through the company Coamix (which he co-founded).

Since the 00's, Hara has developed keratoconus (an eye disease) which has made a consistent output much more difficult and while he has had to slow down and mostly focus on serials (based on his earlier works) where he is credited as a co-writer, he has put off retirement and continues to still produce manga (but no longer at such an intense rate). Excluding a number of short works in various magazines, his career has primarily been working for three magazines: Weekly Shonen Jump (1982-1996), Weekly Comic Bunch (2001-2010) and Monthly Comic Zenon (2010-present).
