Teen Titans #8 - The Culling, Prelude: A Dark Omen!

4

The team came together to save the life of Superboy. Instead they now find themselves at the mercy of a man/creature named Harvest. All of their secrets are about to be revealed.

We've seen the team get together and on their first mission to rescue Superboy, it all blew up in their face. Now that they've been captured, the game may be over for the Teen Titans.

The Good

Everyone loves secrets. The Teen Titans barely know each other so it makes sense that they each have secrets from each other. The problem is, now that they've been captured, their secrets are being discovered. This may provide a way for the team to become closer but it also means their enemies will also know them.

One of the great and worst things about the "New 52" is the fact that there is so much mystery. We know who the characters are but aren't completely aware of what has exactly happened before and what hasn't. We do discover some information on the members of the team. If you've had questions about the members, chances are a lot of them will be answered here.

This also marks the first part of 'The Culling.' Actually, it's the prelude to the upcoming crossover with LEGION and RAVAGERS.

The art this issue was by Ig Guara. It's always interesting to see another artist's take on the characters and there was a really cool scene with Wonder Girl that provided some revelations about her character along with the look that we got to see.

The Bad

There were moments where it felt like a little something was missing. The issue doesn't pick up immediately after the last issue. But because of the nature of the events in the issue, this is something that we see throughout. I understand why but it felt a tad overused.

I had some mixed feelings on the art. Some parts were really appealing but there were moments where the characters looked a little different or lacked some detail. For example, Wonder Girl has been appearing a little more muscular at times but she seems to have lost some of that here. Yes, it's all about artist interpretation but for the nitpickers, there needs to be a certain level of consistency.

The Verdict

The team is together but they are facing their biggest threat yet. They thought they were ready but now all their secrets are in the hands of their enemies. That means readers get to find out some of those secrets of the different members and what that means for their histories in the "New 52." We're also getting a glimpse into the upcoming crossover, "The Culling" which is bound to have lasting repercussions for these characters as well as the ones in LEGION and RAVAGERS. The art was handled by Ig Guara which gave an interesting look at some of the characters but left others looking a little odd at times. Big things are coming for the team, provided they can survive this encounter. One can only imagine what Scott Lobdell has up his sleeve in terms of the future of this series.
