    Sword of Sorcery #8 Review

    Overview:

An all Amethyst issue ends Amara’s story… for now..?

    The Good:

This issue did a great job of wrapping up the series in a clean way. Like several other series in the New 52 this one was fairly far removed from the “regular” universe and focused on Gemworld; this meant that there really were not any crossovers or anything and it was only related to Justice League Dark and John Constantine tangentially. The issue really benefitted from this by being able to wrap up what was essentially an eight issue mini-series with few, if any loose plot threads. The story focuses on Amara and her friends effort to stop Eclipso from taking over Nilaa and enslaving the world. The issue feels like an epic fantasy and really keeps a great pace giving explanation when needed but largely giving a great story with little dialogue; even Amara’s thought boxes, which have been prominent before, are reduced to only a few key moments and eliminate what would be corny dialogue.

Christy Marx writes the issue and does a great job with the dialogue. Another strength of the issue is that there are just enough mysteries to keep the issue interesting beyond the main fight despite this being the last issue and it is a major plus. The level of expository dialogue is just right and flows really well with the rest of the story.

Aaron Lopresti once again does a great job drawing the issue. The art perfectly complements the story and helps it by allowing less dialogue to be needed.

    The Bad:

    The series is ending…

    ***MINOR SPOILER ALERT***

While I do not fault the issue for this, some might be disappointed that that the issue plays it safe with deaths and things of that nature.

    ***END SPOILERS***

    Verdict:

A fantastic end to a great fantasy series is given by the excellent creative team of Christy Marx and Aaron Lopresti. It is unfortunate that the only true fantasy series from the Big 2 is getting cancelled but it goes out with a bang. This was an excellent issue that any fan of the series will enjoy.

    5 out of 5
