Girls Only
When you read as many superhero comics as I do, sometimes you forget to change your outlook on titles like Sweet Tooth. Although there are a few things in the story that you have to stretch your imagination with, try to read this as though it were based in reality to get the best emotional impact from the book.
That being said, sometimes I also grow impatient with this series. I like it so much, I can't wait for the end, and sometimes I feel that issues like this are only slowing down that eventual outcome I can't wait for. If you are like me, be patient and enjoy this for what it is: a further investment in supporting characters.
Our favorites Gus and Jepperd are absent in this issue and it's a girls day out. Up until now, these were all pretty flat characters. Now we get some insight into the hardships that got them to this point. We see why Lucy is such an independent type, get a chilling background for Becky and the heartbreaking tale of Wendy, the Pig Girl.
If you base this reality, these are incredible tales that would be hard to imagine in real life, but make total sense for the story and give us greater insight into the world before the plague. To me, that is what is the most interesting part of the series.
As usual, I'm not a great fan of the artwork. I've come to accept it and it's part of the story, which is the part that interests me most. I did happen to like the artwork of Emi Lenox for the Becky story. It gave the childish charm the story deserved and helped move us along the emotional state of the tale.
In the end we get another roadblock on the way to Alaska. I won't spoil it, but half of me thinks this new character is harmless and the other half thinks he's a sicko serial killer or something (based on the name). I guess I just have to sit back and take this story one book at a time. Maybe I'll be better off that way.
I'll give this issue a 4 out of 5. Great story, great depth. Maybe it didn't move the story along much, but it moved some characters out into the spotlight and made me care about them.
