    The Supreme Soviets were a Soviet team of costumed champions who operated under the supervision of the Special Powers Committee of the U.S.S.R. They were created to replace the Soviet Super-Soldiers and capture the ones that had defected to the United States.

    Origin

    The Supreme Soviets- ( Red Guardian, Perun, Crimson Dynamo, Vostok & Fantasia) were created by the U.S.S.R. government to replace the Soviet Super Soldiers and where sent to to capture former Russian heroes Ursa Major, Vanguard & Darkstar to return them to Russia after the three defected to the US.

    Creation

    The Supreme Soviets were created by Mark Gruenwald, Kieron Dwyer and Al Milgrom in 1989 and first appeared in Captain America # 352.

    Major Story Arcs

    Mission: Bring home the Soldiers

    Under the illusion of Fantasia, the Red Guardian (disguised as Captain America) informed them that their powers had to be tested in order to make certain they are who they claimed they were. They nearly killed the defectors in the ensuing battle, after which, they revealed their true identities.

    People's Protectorate and Merger

    The Supreme Soviets changed their name to "The People's Protectorate" after the Soviet Union collapsed. Eventually that team disbanded and its members merged with the former Soviet Super Soldiers to form the new Russian team, the Winter Guard.
