Superman/Shazam: The Return Of Black Adam Blu-Ray Review
The move (Showcase) opens up with Black Adam crashing down to Earth looking at Fawcett City. The next day (in a few minutes) Billy Batson is being awoke by his alarm clock. Bruce Timm did a really excellent job on this Showcase, he made Billy one of Superman's biggest fans by giving him a Superman T-shirt. Already, Billy is portrayed as a weakling which he is and I think Bruce Timm's team really captured Billy Batson's story. Him trying to work out by doing pull-ups, and looking at a closet full of red sweaters was really funny. When Billy sees his friend, Tawky Tawny, in trouble he tries to do the right thing by standing up for Tawny, however, Billy gets smacked in the face. Kevin Michael Richardson as Tawny was a great choice to be that character. Billy meets up with Clark Kent, whom, already bought Billy breakfast. George Newbern's acting as Superman in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited was great. I enjoyed how he was playing a much older and wiser Superman, than Tim Daly's Superman in the animated series. Personally, I liked how Clark was talking to Billy about good and bad. He said that good is always hard and bad is always easy. That really was interesting even for a 22 minute film. The fight scenes were always jam packed with great artwork, sound effects, and music. Billy Batson turning into Captain Marvel was great because of how the actor (Zach Callison) portrayed Billy Batson. There is one complaint, for some reason no one was in the city! It was weird like everyone moved out of the city before Black Adam arrived. Only a few people were in the city near the end of the movie.
The voice actors that were chosen for this Showcase were carefully picked. George Newbern and Jerry O'Connell coming back to being Superman and Captain Marvel was an extra treat. Instead of Tim Daly and Jeff Benet (Captain Marvel from Batman Brave and The bold), George and Jerry got to become Supes and Captain once again. George's acting as Superman is always with great excellence. While Tim Daly is a great Superman voice actor, George Newbern does a good job playing as a older Superman voice. Arnold Voslo is my favorite villain actor. His accent worked perfectly with Black Adam's character. James Garner was an excellent wizard. If anyone can pull off being a ancient powerful wizard, James can. Other acting is consisted of Josh Keaton and Danica McKeller.
Showcase within a Showcase! DC also has all of the Showcases, Spectre, Jonah Hex, and Green Arrow all in one bundle. So if Superman/Shazam wasn't enough then these other Showcases will make you want to see the next one! One of my favorites is the Spectre, I think Jim Corrigan was the best Spectre in comics. To bad he isn't the current Spectre. Anyway other special features are commentaries with writers Steve Niles, Joe Lansdale, Greg Weisman, and Michael Jelenic. Batman Brave and The bold picked by Bruce Timm is also included in the mix.
With this bundle of joy, Superman/Shazam: The Return Of Black Adam is one of my favorite Showcases (for now that is). If you've missed the previous Showcases then you can save yourself the effort and just pick up this movie package. Overall this is a 5 out of 5.
