Supergirl's New Origin Story
The Story:
While collecting Kryptonite under water, Batman comes across a spaceship. He tracks down the young girl who it belongs to and captures her by using Kryptonite. Once Superman meets her, he finds out that she is his cousin Kara from Krypton. Batman is extremely skeptical about all of this and forms a plan with Wonder Woman to have Supergirl trained on Paradise Island. Supergirl is eventually captured by Darkseid and becomes under his control. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Barda head to Apokolips to rescue Supergirl.
My Thoughts:
Writer Jeph Loeb delivers pinpoint accuracy in his character writing for Superman and Batman. I love how Superman played the overprotective cousin role and was easy to believe that Kara was his cousin from his home planet while Batman's beliefs were the exact opposite. Batman didn't believe Kara at all and kept looking for proof much to Superman's disparagement on the matter.
It was only a matter of time until Supergirl got into some trouble. Darkseid had her marked to be the new leader of his Honor Guard. Witnessing Superman's fury and anger unleashed on Darkseid for this despicable act was awesome to see. Seeing Superman use a Kryptonite ring even though it hurt him to use it was pretty cool. But it came down to Batman who saved the day thanks to his brilliant mind, he out-schemed Darkseid who was forced to break his hold on Supergirl or witness the destruction of Apokolips.
The artwork is by Michael turner who is probably my favorite artist. His style is so stunningly beautiful and elegant. His pencils in this book capture all the emotion and personality of all the characters involved. He draws an awesome Supergirl. The coloring was extravagant and vibrant. The cover gallery alone is a treat to look at.
So far the Superman/Batman series has been incredibly written and depicted. I would encourage all comic fans to give it a shot. A series involving two of the most iconic comic book characters ever created should not be going unread in my opinion.
