Why is it that in the comics Superman can fly in space without a space suit but in the DCAU he wears a space suit whenever he is in space? Can anybody explain why that is the case?
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18886 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Why can't DCAU Superman breathe in space?
@texasdingo: He can, it's just easier to wear the suit so he's not constantly having to hold his breathe, technically one can't "breathe" in space.
@joshmightbe: Yeah I know.
Because cartoons dont have the time to explain how Superman's body also generates air or something for him to breathe.
Umm, nothing can breathe in space, there is no air.
There is no air in space.
Yes, it's been established, even in the OP's pic of Superman in space. Hell, the only thing inaccurate about OP's post is the title.
ANYWAY.
DCAU Supes is underpowered as f**k. See "world made of cardboard" speech:
I think I saw an interview with Dini, Timm and Burnett that said they de-powered Superman so that the audience could appreciate his struggles to preform his superhuman feats.
superman doesnt breath in space in comics eithers, its called holding his breath for a long time
Forgot to mention that part lol
He does "breathe" in space multiple times in the DCAU. Once in JLU when he flew in front of the Watchtower's Orbital Laser, in STAS when he prevented Brainiac from escaping Earth, and another time in STAS where he had to stop a comet.
The other instances were simply so WB could sell toys based on his space suits, and logically so he could actually 'breathe', talk, and communicate while in space.

nothing wrong with pushing for a more "down to earth" Superman... plus the space suits really cool... realistically no one should be able to breath in space because there nothing to breath.
also i dcau superman only wears the full suit when he is going to be exposed to space for prolonged periods + it would save his energy reserves.. but i think he can still survive in space when he needs to.
These.
He can hold his breath in space just fine, and can survive unaided, it's just easier to have a suit to talk and what not.
At 1:30 he quickly goes into space with no suit and survives no problem.

Based on writer's intent, DCAU Superman can't breathe in space. Besides having him in the space suit, there are other instances such as a particular character in a particular episode (Can't remember the name or character) sucking the air out of Superman and suffocating him.

No one breathes in space. We've seen him in space multiple times throughout the DCAU.
That doesn't go with what you said earlier. He's holding his breath in space Superman can survive in a vacuum. Him getting the air sucked out of him doesn't mean he can't survive in space.
You contradicted yourself.
@texasdingo: he held his breath multiple times in space in STAS and in JL/JLU, however, he couldn't talk or communicate, so he had the space suit on to communicate with a radio transmitter, or to be out in space for prolonged periods. This isn't unique to the series, however, he had a mask with a radio transmitter on when he was hanging outside of a space station flirting with WW in Kingdom Come, and wore a breath mask at other points in the 1990s and 2000s as well.
Here's post crisis Superman wearing breathing equipment in space while talking to Green Lantern. It's not just the animated series that did this.
@suemorphplus209: Clark is right. That would be fun. Although not the point of the thread.
@suemorphplus209: Clark has the Green Lantern bubble so he can talk to Hal, not because he can't breath in space. Otherwise Krypto would need one too.
I find the question of this thread to be entertaining.
In overall the Superman from the comics is much more powerful and better in every aspect than his DCAU version.
So the answer is quite easy. In the DCAU they make a weaker more easier version of Superman, maybe to make it easy to make the action scenes. And in comics they don't have that problem so they can go all the way with Superman.
Superman officially became able to survive indefinitely in the vaccum of space ever since the Imperiex arc.
DC Animated Superman was constantly punked by the writers in JL & JLU specifically. They had a hard on for Batman and GL John which annoyed me to the core.
@amazing_webhead: his powers would be slowly drained, giving him easily enough time to get away.

still seems like a pretty big risk to be taking
