What do you think?
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18940 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Who should take over Action Comics?
My top choices that seem plausible:
- Brian Azzarello
- Paul Cornell
- James Robinson
Choices I wish would take over, but are highly unlikely:
- Geoff Johns (Probably wouldn't due to Justice League, Aquaman, and Green Lantern)
- Scott Snyder (Probably wouldn't due to Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire, and plotting Talon)
- Jeff Lemire (Probably wouldn't due to Sweet Tooth, Justice League Dark, Animal Man)
Pull some guy from independent companies like image. I think "saga" 's writer might do a fancy job on superman...(no nudity intended though....it's superman!)

Come on, its about damn time
I dont people's obsession with this guy. Hated his stuff. Still do.
I think the guy taking over detective sounds like a good choice, perhaps he can take over action as well.
I don't mind James Robinson or Jeff Lemire.
Didn't James Robinson get fire by DC?My top choices that seem plausible:

@SandMan_: ???? Is that a joke? LOL, he is writing Earth 2, Shade, 3 issues of DC presents and 1 issue He-man
The only person I can think of filling Morrisons boots is Hickman bit they would never pry him away from Marvel
Lemire has been talking about another upcoming DCU series he's working on.... possibly?
and Snyder has shown interest in writing superman in previous interviews...
they would be my top 2 to take over.
i love johns on aquaman, but don't think he'd be great for superman, same goes for azzarello, he's doing great on WW right now but i wouldn't want him for supes.
how about... Tomasi?
also, possible Winick, seeing as he's leaving Catwoman shortly, i actually think he could do something good with superman...

You know Johns wrote a few really popular story arcs for Superman. But I wouldn't want him to leave Aquaman or Green Lantern or Justice League for Superman.
Tomasi, not for me. Im a huge GL fan and I love Guy. But I just can't stand Tomasi's writing. Its very stale and boring.
Winick could be interesting. But I'm not sure how it will work out.
I agree with you on Snyder and Lemire. Lemire also wrote Superboy before and I think he might possibly be interested in Action Comics.
@sethysquare: yeah, i've read a few of the older johns superman stories, i'd rather he continued what's he's doing...
Lemire has confirmed it's not him.
I like Tomasi on B&R, but yeah, prob not right for action.
i think either Snyder or Winick would be best, i'd like either in different ways. Might be someone completely unexpected though...

I would not mind Winick. Batwing is an awesome series. I also would not mind if Johns took over. Or Snyder or Cornell.
If it has to be someone already affilliated with the company... Geoff Johns, James Robison, Scott Lobdell, Jeff Lemire
I think I would prefer that they bring in somebody fresh though. Someone working in independent comics who might have some new, fresh ideas for Action Comics.
Or, alternatively, I would love to see what Snyder would do with the title... but there's no way he could do it, considering all the books he has on his workload right now
Why are people mentioning Lobdell? He's already going to write Superman's name title.
Snyder doesn't really fit Superman. Guy pretty much does horror type comics.

Sweet Tooth is soon ending but he's writing Kid Eternity too :p
Azzarello has a chance of writing it after he's finished with his minis.

I'd quite like Joe Kelly back to write Superman. His "Whatever happened to Truth, Justice and the American Way" story is one of my all time favourite Superman stories. Perhaps Garth Ennis because as well as his Hitman stuff, he wrote an awesome Superman as well. Also I'd be willing to see Brian Azarello back on Superman. All these are the closest things to possible realistic choices. They might be working on other titles and other writers I'd like to see write Action Comics like Geoff Johns and Mark Waid are attached to other commitments.
Now I'll add writers I don't want to write Superman. Suffice to say there are a few but I'll focus on names that have come up in this thread before. James Robinson ruined my enjoyment of Superman in his Atlas storyline and New Krypton tie ins. One that hasn't come up in this list is JMS. Any of you who've read Grounded know it came close to the same amount of ruin Sin's Past and OMD did to Spider-Man. And I don't want Snyder anywhere near Superman. His Batman work is unbelievable, a lot of issues of Batman I've preferred over Morrison's Action Comics. However, Snyder is a dark gothic writer which is why his ideas work better on Batman, Swamp Thing and American Vampire. I didn't care much for his Flashpoint: Superman series. His writing style doesn't fit with Superman at all.

I'd like to see Snyder branch out, and see whether or not he could handle other types of comics, that's the only reason I mention him. But fingers crossed for Azzarello, both Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and Superman: For Tomorrow were fantastic.
@The_Tree:
Should read For Tomorrow even though I've heard mixed reception of it. His Luthor was fantastic on the other hand. One of the reasons why Azz should write AC. Nobody has hardly touched Lex and Azz is one of his best writers. Plus he likes to write villains and Supes' rogues definitely need the boost.

The book is very hit or miss with most. I think the main reason people don't like it is because it can get confusing, and the book relies heavily on dialogue rather than being action driven. But you're definitely right about his rogues gallery needing a boost, especially after the relaunch. I'd love to see what he could do for Metallo, Parasite, and lastly, General Zod.

Ha, that almost sounds like Azzarello's 100 Bullets but that was perfect and almost everybody loved that :p

Personally would love to see him tackle Black Adam the most even though he's not a Superman villain. Should at least do a mini of him like MOS or an OGN like Joker with Bermejo.

I would get pumped for that. Although I don't see it happening, if ever, until a long way down the line since DC's trying to reestablish the Marvel family.
@Lvenger: No, he's doing Wonder Woman and a Vertigo mini called Spaceman. He's also writing the Before Watchmen mini series for Comedian and Rorschach. I bet he's pretty far into his work on his minis, but if anything's keeping him from Action Comics, it would be the minis. And he wrote the entirety of For Tomorrow.
Pull some guy from independent companies like image. I think "saga" 's writer might do a fancy job on superman...(no nudity intended though....it's superman!)That doesn't seem like a bad idea, actually.
@The_Tree: Ah I forgot about the Before Watchmen mini series. I don't really care about those titles much. And I'll check out this Spaceman thing as well. From the sound of things, it seems like he's got plenty of work already so fitting in Action Comics as well would give Azzarello quite a big workload.

Yeah. One can only hope.
Not sure if Sholly Fisch is a big enough name for Superman. My plan is for Geoff Johns to write Action Comics and let Jeff Lemire take over Aquaman with Ivan Reis still on Aquaman. Sholly Fisch can then continue writing the back ups.

I hate everyone who has mentioned Geoff Johns.
Azzarello or a complete random are my choices.
But Johns can write Superman well. Up, Up and Away, Last Son, Brainiac, the Legion of Superheroes story amongst others were all really great stories. Obviously he can't due to him writing Justice League, Green Lantern and Aquaman but though I am not one of them, many want Johns off Justice League.

Johns off Justice League would be a disaster.

@sethysquare: There are those that would disagree with you but I am not one of them. The Villain's Journey is a much better main story than the first 6 origin issues and the Shazam backup is just wonderful. I can't wait to see Billy on the Justice League!
Totally agree. I gotta say I think its shaping up to be one of the best runs of Justice League. I especially loved all the subtle cameos of each hero's obscure villain.
@Lvenger: Aquaman.
Geoff Johns said he would be introducing new villains and all but there are 3 villains from Aquaman's rogue gallery that he wants to use. Black Manta, Ocean Master and an unnamed one.
People have been speculating that it is scavenger.
@sethysquare: Cool. He was the only one that I didn't recognise in Justice League 10. Only because the only rogues of Aquaman I know are Black Manta, Ocean Master and Charboydis. And I only know that Charboydis was the reason Aquaman lost a hand and had it replaced with the badass hook.
Due to the fact that both Superman titles are under preforming, DC has a Superman movie coming out soon, and its been so long since Superman has had a well written book DC is under a lot of pressure to get a really good Superman monthly comic going. Superman is the face of DC and deserves the best writers. Who do I think will get the title? Brain Azzarello, James Robinson or Paul Cornell. I have nothing against these writers (except I still haven't forgiven Robinson for Cry for Justice). In fact I would love to see Azzarello write Action. Who would I love to see get the title? Mark Waid, Matt Wagner, Scott Snyder, or Greg Rucka.
