Omg.....this book is so freaking good.....
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18939 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Who else has read Secret Identity???
I remember reading it a few years ago and not liking it. But everyone says its an amazing story so I'm going to have to reread it again.
@batmannflash: Omg thank you. I thought I was gonna hate it and just keep it for the AMAZING ART...but this story got me in my feels Soooo many times. It's so emotional. And beautifully written. And i think it's the most relatable superman has ever been for me. I love it
@sog7dc: I agree. It's really beautiful but I haven't read it in awhile, so I might need to reread to refresh my memory. But technically he isn't "Superman" right? He's just someone in the real world who has strikingly similar aspects to Superman
@batmannflash: Yeah. He is but he isn't. At times i thought Clark was kind of a jerk without a sense of humor but Busiek's writing is so brilliant I think he wants us to feel that way and identify with Clark and view the world from his perspective, a theme referenced in the book multiple times. At it's heart I think this book is all about perspective and rebirth and progression

he's kind of like what may have happened to Superboy Prime had CoIE's not happened...I mean his name is Clark Kent..he lives in a Universe where Earth has no other heroes and Superman is just a comic book character and he somehow gets Superman powers
I liked the story, but I don't remember there ever being an explanation for his powers. Was there ever one and I missed it?
@batmannflash: It seemed to be some
Sort of government experimentation but it's never clarified and I think the story is better because it isn't clarified. And they definitely don't come from the sun.
@batmannflash: IIRC a meteor hit the ground in Kansas and affected a bunch of people/babies (I think through contaminated water). Those that exhibited super powers were found by the government and tested on, but Clark slipped under the radar.
I'm gonna have to reread it now because I don't remember anything like that at all happening

lol yeah same... I don't remember that
@batmannflash: @mitran: I guess Mitran's right...this is from the wikipedia page
He uncovers records of government research into creating super-powered people, and concludes that his powers are the result of a meteor shower exposing him to unknown agents, and his subconscious shaping his powers to match the Superman archetype.
this is just beautiful. and there is no shortaage of beautiful splash pages in this book
I wasn't a fan of Busiek's Superman run but maybe I should check this out.
Dude, it is awesome really you are missing.
Especially if you want a realistic take on Superman which doesn't suffer from grittiness and darkness.
Also what about Camelot Falls did you like it?
Hated it I'm afraid. Not as much as the Insect Queen but Busiek destroyed Arion, wrote a completely pointless and inconsequential story that was darting around all over the place unsure where its direction was going. And don't get me started on Insect Queen :P

Hehe i imagined as much :-P it wasn't my cup of tea either, don't be afraid to pick this story though it is completely different.
@squalleon: I'll try and pick it up in the future.

I have...one of my favorite Superman books
Same here. I like to refer to it as "Superboy Prime: How it Should have Happened" because really the premise is so simple, yet opens so many possibilities. Regular kid in what is essentially our world where all superheroes are fictional, suddenly ends up with Superman-like powers. I kinda always wanted a kind of spin-off of this idea to happen with other superheroes, like a Flash: Secret Identity, or a Green Lantern: Secret Identity. I'd really love to see how they would work a fully powered GL Ring, any version magical Starheart or GL Corps, into a realistic setting.
