    It will depend on people.

    For me, He is embodiment of conscience.

    For other person, Superman may be embodiment of wish fulfillment.

    It depends on person to person.

    So What idea does Superman embody for you?

    @amami:

    How about American way?

    Superman's character is tied to American way which "was" ideal of america.

    It is sad for non-american fan like me that Americanway is only ideal of old days.

    Truth, Justice and the best of humanity. At least that's what a well written Superman is supposed to represent.

    He stands for "Truth, Justice and the American Way".

    But what he embodies is the best of humanity and “I Can Do Anything”.

    Conscience and TJ&AW stuff, like “holding back”, are intrinsic aspects of his personality, but even when he gets evilfied, he’s still Mr. I Can Do Anything (with some "Evil Never Wins" exceptions).

    He's a lot of things, really.

    For me, Evilfied Superman is not Superman.

    I think that He is Superman because He has god like power and conscience which equals his power.

    Superman witthout his conscience will be terrible to humanity.

    For me, Evilfied Superman is not Superman.

    I didn’t say he was. He’s Evil Superman. But he still has that particular trait of “Can Do Anything”, or at least "unstoppability". It’s just that “anything” now means “terrifying, very bad things”, or sometimes “very annoying things”. It's corrupting his power for evil.

    You asked what he embodies; and what he embodies isn’t necessarily the same thing as his definitive character. I apologise if that confuses you.

    (In other words, just ignore it - Evil Superman is somewhat off-topic.)

    Superman witthout his conscience will be terrible to humanity.

    That’s the point of Evil Superman. What would happen if Luke Skywalker fell to the Dark Side?

    Murder. Man of murder.

    No but seriously, hope. Potential. Justice. A shield for humanity. The idea that anyone can be accepted, even if their from another planet.

    Murder. Man of murder.

    well if your basing it off his actions in Man Of Steel, that´s pretty spot on.

    @supermudz:

    I can't agree with you on that, sorry.

    Indeed, Superman is story about wish fullfillment. It is true. But S&S and countless writers put many ideal for them into Superman. Some saw Superman as Champion of the oppressed, Other treated Superman as big blue boyscout. For me, I saw pure conscience in him. So Superman is in a sense Vessel of ideals.

    Your Wishfulfillment Superman and my Superman of conscience are only part of it.

    I think you're agreeing with me without realising it, but simply don't see the distinction I'm making.

    Evil Superman is not Superman. Nobody wishes to be evil. I only brought him up to help clarify a distinction I was making, but it seems to have just confused you. Yes, wish fulfillment and conscience are just two aspects of Superman. Zod/Ultraman is a kryptonian, and so he also represents unstoppable power - but he's not Superman, because Superman is more than that.

    And pure conscience alone would not make him Superman, it'd make him Jiminy Cricket.

    Just assume that we agree. It's my grammar that you seem confused by.
