    Superman

Character » Superman appears in 18939 issues.

Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!

What if Clark and Superman were two different characters?

In another thread, someone asked what would Superman be without his powers? I have been working on an admittedly bad fanfiction set in the real world. The way I decided to hide his dual appearance here in the real world, where everybody knows he has a secret identity as a reporter is to give them two different faces.

These are the actors that inspired the looks of each half of Superman/Clark - Douglas Fairbanks and Harold Lloyd. If the writers had to draw them as having completely different looks and Clark was always unpowered, how would they make the comic interesting? How could you write Clark Kent as a mortal who had no fear of being discovered as Kal-El? What would be his personality when he didn't need to fade into the background?

I wouldn't even know where to start. The character that Clark/Superman is comes from his upbringing. You essentially change the dynamic of one or the other without the Kents. yeah, I dunno. but you're not talking about them being two different people, right?

@press_oblivion: Correct. They are still the same person, but instead of putting on a dorky blue suit, Clark can willingly de-power himself, but in the process different genes are activated resulting in him having completely different looks. Clark would have a swimmers' build, Superman, the muscles. How could the writers make Clark a 3D character that could stand on his own, but still have to respond to emergencies as Superman. Nobody would ever guess these were actually the same person - even though they share the same skin.
Bruce Wayne could masquerade as Superman, but not Clark.

There are three personalities: Clark, Superman, and Smallville.

Clark: bumbling reporter who has no influence whatsoever on people.

Superman: No Facade, but no real backstory.

Smallville: Some secrets, but he had ambition and was willing to appear to be a successful normal human.

They all make up who he is.
