Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Superman is a frustration, the thing I like about him is the same thing I hate, he never shows his true power and is always underestimated, but remains a shining example of self-control. While his humility rarely allows him to show how physically strong he truly is, it shows a different kind of strength.
While I'm not really a big fan of him, I acknowledge the fact that he is the greatest superhero (tied with Spiderman, but Spiderman is great for other reasons and hasn't been around as long) - he's not the fastest, he's not the toughest, he's not the strongest, but he is certainly the purest, and that's what makes him great. People should stop belching about Superman being invincible because his greatness isn't that he has unbeatable powers (although he is right up there with the elite), it lies in his heart.
The definitive superhero, the most powerful and the most kind, good, most inspiring character in fiction. He is a symbol of hope that people should follow and aspire to be like
If Clark Kent is a metaphor for humanity and Kal-El a metaphor for the divine then Superman represents the divine spark of goodness and greatness hidden with in everyone. He is the potential to be better than what we are.
My friends call him a pansy representing the total definition and personification of geek/nerd culture being in love with itself. And there not wrong in a sense, but at least I tell them he's fucking cooler than them.
A god among men. A character who's meant to speak hope and inspiration but in reality his sacrifices expresses his strength of faith in humanity. Superman is THE hero Whether you like him or not
