I just re-watched it and I must say I really really enjoyed it. Amost as much as I liked Avengers or even MOS. Did this movie get unfair reviews?
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18940 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Was Superman Returns really THAT bad?
It's good for what it is. A homage to Donner's movies but it fails in the action department especially since it came a year after Batman Begins which had some serious action in it.
Really? I thought the Airplane scene was amazing. I am a Marvel fanboy, but that was one of (if not the) best action sequence I have ever seen in a superhero movie.
It's not horrible. The only real problems are the whole kryptonite mountain and the baby daddy thing (the former is worse than the latter)
Just like MOS, there's a lot I would have done differently because my interpretation of Superman is different, but it very much appreciate the Gatsby-aqueous story they told.
In its own right SR was a solid movie. Its problem that it was too faithful to Donner’s stereotypes + plus several storylines were awful + Routh didn’t convince me that he was right to play Reeve’s Superman.
..no it wasn't that bad, I wrote a blog on this last year. The only bit I hated was the Lex Luthor turning into a super-powered thug part, when he beat up on the weakened Clark....I love the bits where superman saves that plane, takes a bullet to the eye and flies that huge island to the sky while weakened...
I had say this several times, the problem is that is a love letter to the older movies, so it made hard to understand what it was going on in the movie for most of the people.
It wasnt what people was expecting, that is why people hated the movie.
After Batman Begins, people got the idea it was a reboot.
The worst part of the movie is that it tried to be a sequel to the Reeve movies which happened almost 30 years ago from Returns. As a result the actors didn't play the characters but they played the older actors playing the characters(if that makes any sense). The script was horrible at parts, especially the Supes/Lois kid part.
Anyway I think it gets as much critique as it deserves, there are some good moments but in a 2 hour long movie, having 15-30 minutes of good content doesn't mean anything.
Yes, it's pretty bad.
First off, it's a far inferior carbon copy of the original movie, adding nothing to it and actually reinforcing that the original movie and the character himself are outdated.
Secondly, for as much as people talk about Man of Steel "destroying" the character, stalking a married woman and abandoning his bastard child are puritanical morals.
it's ok. just ok. some really stupid moments and supes being a dead beat dad. BUT compared to man of steel it's citizen kane.

I was over seas and they were playing it for free for troops and I got up and walked out it upset me.
I was expecting better is all.
Man of Steel blew it away all but the Lois parts I cannot stand Lois. had they done WW it would have blew our socks off. Oh and maybe not killed that guy at the end hmmm on a good note I would say they heal so fast that General Zod could easily live through a snapped kneck.
I also did not think it was a bad movie...I wished they went another route in regards to villains other than Lex Luthor, and the kid part made no damn sense to me, but I also said that Brandon Routh got an unfair shake, he made a very good superman in my opinion, and aside from those two factors it was a very good movie in my opinion.
YES! IT WAS.
Singer had done a great job with the X-Men movies and has such I was expecting him to restart the story from scratch. But noooo. He had to make a movie/tribute to the first two movies that featured Christopher Reeve.
And the story itself, it was terrible. The characters had no life, no fire to them, I've seen plays in theaters that had much more life to them.
It brought nothing new, it was like looking at a wall and watching paint dry. The one that got the short stick in the end was Brandon Routh. Just look at his career. Superman Returns almost ended it. Fortunally for him his audictioning for the role of Atom, in the serie Arrow and that might bring him back from oblivion.
yes, it was that bad. clark kent disappears for years and no one cares. lois did have some romantic interest in clark, and they were best friends. he just vanishes, and she doesn't look for him? she is an investigative reporter. you would think that she would be trying to move heaven and earth to find what happened to him. heck, no one seems to care that he left. no one bothered to look for him at all? then he comes back after being gone for years and supes just conveniently comes back, also. it's dumb. that's too big of a coincidence for people who know clark. i still can't get over the fact that clark reappears and no one bothers to question him on his whereabouts. you would think that his friends would have been ticked off at him for not calling at least once.
@transformers1024: May I ask if you are a fan of the Transformers movies?
@christianrapper: thank you!!!!!

Honestly, I enjoyed both for what they were. I think if you blended them you'd have the perfect Superman film.
If you take Superman Returns' heroics, Clark Kent, lighter and more hopeful tone and humor
and then combine that with
MOS' action, tension and supporting cast
Add in a little tweeking of the plot and better pacing then I think they would have something great.

Conceptually what you're saying makes some sense I guess. But the final products were so different and strange that combining the two wouldn't necessarily work. And thus we're left with the reason why Superman hasn't had a good live action film since the 80s I guess. Make it too hopeful and it seems too preachy. Make it too realistic and it screams dark, moody and violent.
I wrote a blog a while back about this subject. There are elements of Superman Returns that work really well. When he saves the plane, that was just so epic, ditto taking a bullet to the eye and the bullet just bouncing off...it was the first time they had been able to use CGI for stuff like that. But other stuff was cringeing...some of the Lex Luthor scenes reminded me of joel Schumacher's Batman films and the fight with luthor on the kryptonite laden island was awful......
