Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18940 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Uh So Is This Pa Kent Or Jor El?
@lvenger Thoughts?
@jonny_anonymous: It's possibly his mentor from the future, since the storyline is name the man of tomorrow.
@maccyd: But would you really need a future mentor to tell you to get up after being knocked down?
@jonny_anonymous: Depends what future supes could have been going through,he had to get reminded of his moral codes.
@smashbrawler: Reminds me of Dr. Doom and the Marquis of Death, if that would be the case.
Could be a new character that Johns rectonned into Superman's past, it wouldn't be the first time.
That's pretty much what I was thinking. DC has done some really stupid things since the reboot but I doubt they'd be stupid enough to make Pa Kent or Jor El a villain-type character.
@jonny_anonymous: If you're wondering, I was thinking of something along the lines of Cap America after Dimension Z.
@smashbrawler: Hey! New 52 Superman is modern and hip, guys!

Never underestimate the extent of another man's stupidity
I feel like I have read half the issue already...Also third page, the first panel, really were those the best he could do? Did no one seen how rediculous these arms are?
Anyway he is probably a new character also I think the solicits mention a character from Superman's past.
From Superman 33 solicit:
It’s up, up and away as the titanic team of Geoff Johns, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson continue their epic run on the Man of Steel! In their second issue, we learn more about the mysterious Ulysses and what his emergence will mean to Clark Kent and the world. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure is targeting Metropolis with strange mechanical creations...but why? And what dark secret from Clark’s past does it connect to?

You know me, Jonny. I bash DC every chance I can get now..but even so, I don't think DC will go through with making either father a villain. Especially since we've already seen so much of Jor-El. It would just be a huge outcry of hate by fans.

Something that DC seems to feed on these days :-P
That art is turrible
I am actually surpriced it is that good! Since Romita isn't in top form these days.
Anyway I like it, it has momentum and except some bad panels here and there (I mean the arms!!! in the thrid page), It is ok. Also the way he used the screens in the last page is impressive.

It's the photoshop sky on the second page that bothers me the most

It didn't bother me since the colors are nice and the sky doesn't stand out a lot. It was probably added by the colorist not Romita but who knows.

I agree

No idea where you're getting from that he may be a villain.
Batman got games of thrones spoilered and went into the caves.
to further back up my thesis

I jumped to conclusions lol. It seems very villain-esque to me.
@jonny_anonymous: Looks like the new 52 version of Cleric.....hmmm Actual info here.
5 years went by in the N52 between Action Comics # 8 and Superman # 1 and Action Comics # 9 that we don't know about.
Geoff only has to fill in the blanks.

I'm personally hoping he's some kind of sensei figure for Clark, an actually new concept for a change.

He looks like he's being vaccuumed out the window on the first page lol

Well my initial thought was
This is quite bewildering I must say. I have absolutely no idea who he is, whether he's a mentor, a villain or a rebirth of Jonathan Kent himself. Saying that reveal is strange doesn't really cover it for me. Is he from Krypton, from space, another human, someone from the DCU's past? I hope this isn't anything stupid that DC are going to do yet again because I've been looking forward to Johns' Superman a lot recently and this adds a wrinkle to my enthusiasm. I'm all for change but only if executed rightly in a way that's respectful to the characters' involved.
Still, if it is a teacher from Superman's past, it won't be as weird as Superman's robot teacher from The Silver Age that got him laid with a mind controlled girl.

@dernman: your right, hey kinda does look like that guy

Nice catch. He certaintly could be. But I am surpriced he called him Clark and not Kal. Who knows we will have to wait and see.

I agree too. There are five years of stories we don't know about, so it would be weird if someone DIDN'T touch on those years, since they were heavily transitional for Supes.
…maybe this book cursed or something. Lobdell had all talented artists working with him, now superior writer replaced him – and here it is, Romita Jr.’ art. I don’t care about his status as an iconic artist or something; those hands, this face kills half of my excitement for Johns’ run right here and now.
Alright, rant is over.
I sincerely hope that this is neither of Clark’s fathers (let them rest in peace). But if it is, then it most likely Jonathan Kent (he calls Superman Clark plus Jor-El hardly had time to teach anything to his son).

Yes it seemed odd to me also though this is a universe where Cyborg Superman ended up being Zor-El. So for all we know Cleric could very well end up being Pa Kent......... :-/
