Superman stronger. They already fought in JLA vs Avengers. Superman caught the hammer when it was swung at him, then Superman knocked him out with a punch.

That's Pre-Flashpoint Superman vs Classic Thor. One version against another. Some versions of Thor are stronger than some versions of Superman and vice versa.

This is correct to a point . Now classic thor isnt stronger than even the recent superman before DC 52 version . What you want to say he is powerful with his hammer. Now with ever age at the same comic time line Supes has always been stronger. The most powerful Thor is Rune King Thor . There are many version of Supes yes even the MYXpz version Thats out class Rune king Thor and There is prime 1 million who is feat less but by every superman there is Even the Mxy version respects power. NOw no thor is as powerful as any Mxy not even the bat mite version .

Superman, but of course this decision is done mostly out of bias because their strengths are quite close. The same applies to almost everyone who posted in this thread.

I think Thor may be the most overhyped of all of Marvels characters (and he seems even weaker in the Marvel Now stuff). From feats, not hype, Hulk is definitely his superior in strength. But can anyone post any amazing strength feats for Thor? The only arguments Ive ever seen made for Thor are all ABC arguments. "Well Thor hit So-n-So." Ok, but that doesnt give us any idea of Thor's abilities/specs. And anyway, usually So-n-So is featless as well. And then you point that out in a debate, and the Thor fans say, "Well Supes has been around longer, and his showings are really inconsistent."

By the most objective measure at our disposal (and its not perfectly objective, no), Superman is the strongest non-cosmic in either Universe. And brushes cosmic levels often enough. But as I said earlier can anyone even make a good argument for Thor? And dont use the Serpent feat, because that doesnt prove anything, there is just no info in that scan, and the serpents size fluctuates like mad.

Im going to say this now, ive dabbled in Thor only, and I havent chased down every back issue or anything, but from what ive seen, I dont have any reason to believe WW, GL, Shazam, or Martian Manhunter couldnt just waste him.

He bench pressed the weight of the Earth, WITHOUT SUNLIGHT, for five days straight, and at the end only dropped ONE BEAD of sweat. This is all implicitly stated in the book. Supes literally says, "Is that all you got?" and the scientist tells him the only the way to test the limits of his strength is to tap into a trans-dimensional wormhole that could potentially destroy the Earth! It was epic.

Superman, he has shown more strength feats than Thor. Although Thor is a character who should be as strong as Superman.

But I like Thor more as a fictional character.

Superman?! a Kryptonian whose flight ability doesn't really explained.

You could make a very good argument for Superman being stronger.

You could make an argument for Thor being equal in strength to Superman.

I dont think you could make a credible argument for Thor being stronger.

On balance, I think most people would conclude that Superman is stronger.

As for Thor in the DCU I would put him as stronger than Wonder Woman who I would probably put at about 80% of Supermans strength on average.

I'd like to think it's roughly equal, but if I had to pick one for strength alone, I'd say Superman. Thor is close, though.

I haven't read this whole thread, just the first page.. . . .

Some people think that the title of GOD should be dismissed. I look at the designation of godhood as that of creator of world in which characters like the Hulk and Superman exist, they are "creatures". Gods have command over elements and environments that "creatures" cannot hope to achieve unless given that right by a GOD.

In my opinion, Gods should not be defeated or overcome by anything lesser than a God and as much as I love Superman, he is not a God and that's part of his appeal for me as a fan.

Wonder Woman recently bested a GOD in issue 12 of her series and I think this is an epic feat for her, while other dismiss it.

Based on this, I say THOR is stronger because of my opinion on the status of a God.

Thor just isn't that kind of a God. Not in mythology or the comics. The idea of an omnipotent, omniscient God is pretty fundamental to most of our upbringing and our culture but in the case of Thor the term God probably means something closer to "superhuman" than what the Judeo-Christian concept of God implies. Theres nothing about Thor being an Asgardian that makes him inherently more powerful than someone like Superman.

In my opinion, Gods should not be defeated or overcome by anything lesser than a God and as much as I love Superman, he is not a God and that's part of his appeal for me as a fan.

    I understand what you mean.

What is it about Superman that makes him more powerful than any God? Perhaps the term of God is used to liberally these days, like artist. If Thor isn't that kind of God then perhaps he's just a super powered being from another existence that are more like the people of Earth with an archaic sense of style.

It's all a matter of perspective.

    THEY. ARE. EQUAL.

    They're both super-powered aliens.

Both have fans who aren't really fans.

Both have access to advanced alien technology (Thor call his "magic" but magic is the same as alchemy which is not apart from the realm of actual science).

Only difference is the hammer Thor always carries around.

Anyone who actually knows their comics knows Thor has pulled off the same type of stuff Superman has.

    From Merriam-Webster

    Definition of ALCHEMY

:a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of the base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life

Alchemy is about as scientific as as phrenology or blood letting.
