As Superman gets older like in Kingdom Come and retires to the farm providing he does come in contact with kryptonite and no villain has defeated him. Should one assume that he would pretty much live forever? Since as far as I know he doesn't get sick like human do.

I think he would eventually die as in most stories even if he can live decades or even centuries longer than humans he still appears to age and grow physically older. Eventually we hit a point where we got to ask how long can his body go on if it continues to age but his power remains, one will give in so he will either stop ageing and stay in that form forever or he will just die from old age one day. *Hopefully in his sleep, I hate to see old characters fall down and die in the middle of something really plays on my heartstrings*

Besides Kingdom Come and a few alternate stories, it all points to that if Superman stays under the exposure to stars that aren't red, he can pretty much live forever.

Which to some degree it makes perfect sense. Given his powers levels why should he be conditioned like normal humans to die of old age.

If his body acts like it does, growing stronger the older he gets, then we can logically assume that the same energy that fuels his powers, when the time comes when his cells would normally start to degrade, that a physiological change occurs that alters the aging process altogether. And instead of having his cells degrade they actually upgrade with time.

Becoming more efficient and powerful. Allowing Superman to live on forever.

Honestly I much more like the idea of Superman living forever but his descendents don't. At least when it was him and Lois. Because a son with a human would imply a weakening of the kryptonian genes. And as such a limited lifespan in contrast with the unlimited lifespan of a pure blood kryptonian.

Sure. In stories like Kingdom Come, Red Son and others like Elseworlds it was shown versions of Superman that do grow old and weaker with age, and eventually die. But it as also been shown he could live forever. The best example of that being Superman-Prime One Million.

@daingermouz20: In the Kingdom Come Universe, Superman developed immunity to Kryptonite. He was also old and frail and without Diana after 1,000 years, so I am going to assume that on Earth-22, he had a lifespan a little over 1,000 years.

In DC One Million, he is Godlike and pretty much lives inside the Sun, and is pretty much immortal so long as there is some kind of yellow or blue star inside which he can live.

Too bad that part was so poorly explained. After all Superman had spent 70.000 years traveling through the cosmos, before he returned to Earth. So the needing of a yellow or any kind of star for all we know might not even applied to him anymore.

Also we don't know if it was his powers that made the sun into the super-sun, the fact that he made the sun his fortress, or if he had a symbiotic relationship with the super-sun. The only one's we know really needed the super-sun were his descendents like Kal Kent. Has for Superman-Prime, we know very little about. Except for the fact that Kal Kent spoke of him being perhaps the most powerful being in the entire universe.

    Now we'll never know.

@heavenlydarkdragon: Yep, DC One Million was a weird story, but interesting one, where I wondered how connected it was to All-Star Superman. Maybe it was since Superman saw the vision of Superman Prime, or them again, he did supposedly have the Son in the past of the DC One million universe, either way, I ought to give it a read again.
