In the original comic, Superman couldn't fly. I'm surprised and I only knew about this recently. Did you guys know cos this sure jumped up out of nowhere.
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18886 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Superman couldn't fly?
Walkingstone says:
"Was it something to do with him working out how to? Like something he grew into?"
I really have no idea. I'm not really into that Superman.
No, it was just an editorial thing. Back then, stories weren't nearly as complex or convoluted as they are now. It all came down to this: Superman was pretty popular. He jumped, he was strong, he was fast. Then, Fawcett created Captain Marvel. He could fly, was faster, and was stronger. He became phenomonally popular. Then, Superman mysteriously developed the ability to fly (however, this could also be attributed to the George Reeves show/serials).

I love it when writers do that.
There was the whole "able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" thing. He had soooo many crazy powers that writers would just put in.
Oh dear god, that's just insane! Steel hair as a mop? It would scrape through to the foundations. Talk about dated isn't in it
Super-mathematics? Woah, y'know I think I've done some of that in the past. Corr, didn't know it was a super-power. Huh, I was a superhero all along ;)
I thought I heard that before, the whole not flying thing. There's a great page in Wizard, about some of the crazy powers characters used to have. Did you know, Superman used to be able to shoot smaller Superman out of his finger's? Me either.

Hilarious. I love what he was thinking, "A shower of meteorites heading for Metropolis and one of them contains Kryptonite- a substance that can kill me! I...I'll order my image to save the city from the meteors! And if the Kryptonite should destroy him- well that's his tough luck!"
What a jerk!
Imagine what kind of things he could do around the house. Combine them with the little Supermen from the fingers and you've got an instant cleaning business.

This thread is old, let it die.

Instead of an "S" logo, you can have a (
| f(x)dx : that alone strikes fear in people )Some of my "math tricks" amaze people, like 20% tip is just 10% (move decimal over) times two. People think I'm one of those math computers, when I just do a little trick. I have a degree in math, so people assume I can multiply numbers like 9285 x 723.So maybe we can form the "Mathtice League" and save the day when there's a bomb and it can only be diffused by factoring X^4 + 2X^3 - 11X^2 -12X. Just as plausible as cutting the red wire - that's just the color of the coating around the wire. It's what the wires are connected to is what matters.
Oh,GOD! that cracked me up.....Super-MAth!!XD...Super-landscape!!XD...Super-Makeup,you gotta be KIDDING!XD....I think I just pissed.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...and that, ladies and gentlemen,is why Supes SUCKED..(notice the past tense)....

able to leap tall buildings kinda gave it away
Yeah, cos' overtime DC realised how Popular Superman was so they started to make him stronger, faster etc. But it actually makes sense because the longer he is exposed to the Yellow Sun the stronger and faster he gets
Andferne says:
"Only way I could remember that Supes origanlly couldnt fly was the old saying. Faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locamotive, and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Now I alwasy though WTF does he need to leap for when he can fly? Then I remembered."
I believe it was The 1940's Fleischer Cartoons that had Superman flying for the first time.
Shuster(the origenal artist) liked to show superman leaping(was prolly one of his favorite poses to draw).
Walkingstone says:
"Oiya-bugger-man! They wanted him to be a god then. Not that he's not but still, woah."
Not exactly writer's constantly tested Superman with new powers to see if it fits him in a story, if it doesn't work they just retcon it, those that fit Superman was kept. The Super makeup and hypnotism was to help him hide his identity.
Superman original powers.
Basically, writers in the Golden Age make him less powerful, but then, after Max Fleischer want him to make Superman to fly because leaping is very hard to be amde in the animations those days.
