Poll Should Superman Be Able To Move Earth? (80 votes)
In my "Ideal Power Level" thread, planet moving was often mentioned. So: should he be a planet-mover?
Character » Superman appears in 18939 issues.

I vote no. On the surface - it doesn't make it crazy/impressive that SBP did it (and in InfC it was viewed as WOAMG!).
I don't think anyone should do it because it's not a feat of strength (given the location, in space)...and it's just silly (science wise). (You have no platform to exercise leverage off of. It's be like floating next to a large space-station, even if you could lift it from the ground on Earth, if you tried to do that in space you would just be moving about holding it's side (like, someone holding themselves stiff off a vertical metal pole). It has more mass & therefore more inertia. If you pushed it you would go floating away because you have much less mass. Even if we don't want to hold it to that standard (...though it's not much, IMO :D), the energy required to move such a large mass out of it's orbit (fighting the gravity of it's star, etc) would make every on-planet feat the equivalent of lifting a grain of rice (if that). There's enough inconsistency in the feats of Supes-level people (I mean..Supes surviving a super-nova yet other things do any damage to him whatsoever?..no sense).
@lightsout: you are awsome you are the frist superman guy ever to use real god i hate superman fans becouse of crap like that now i need a post about can superman beath in space tho space is a vacum
@nerosmoke1: That I actually don't have a problem with if his biology doesn't require any oxygen (/other gas) for it's metabolic processes.
There was a gif of this from Young Justice about this. Superman: "I could just move the earth." Batman: "I could think of too many reasons on why that couldn't work..." Or something like that!
no It was not from Young Justice, It was from Justice League: Doom.
Any and all characters should be as strong as they need to be as the plot demands.
Superman shouldn't "bench" the Earth for 5 days for no reason just to appease fanboys.
But if the sun was going to explode and he needed to move the Earth...so bet it (lets not get into the details of why this is a retarded scenario, its just hypothetical example)
That goes for anyone.
@black_arrow: Oh you're right, I guess their similar or is it the same animation which probably confused me! Thanks for that.

the art was made by the same guy who did Young justice that is way you got confused.

This sums up my thoughts.
He should be strong enough to move the earth but shouldn't actually do it. Ever. he has already shown he can handle the earths weight with just his upper body so he is probably strong enough already. But then again you have to factor in the force needed to counteract the suns gravity. But no, he shouldn't actually do it. That would seem like PIS.
Shooting lasers out of his eyes and ice out of his mouth is okay but we draw a line at moving a planet? What makes the latter more "stupid" than the former?
@pperspectiveandreality: i can imagine that at some point in time we will have the tech to allow people to fly and shoot lasers out of their eyes. I dont believe that people will ever be able to move planets.
@eternal19:
Well then to each his own. If we're judging comics by their stupidity then a great many comics should be called on the carpet. Thor hits so hard he creates shock waves in a vacuum, Martians are just naturally mega powered cosmic heralds and there are light police powered by jewelry.
Yes, he should be able to move a planet on his own by exerting himself quite a bit and by using some tech. You can't simply push a planet away 'cause you will fly through it. I am thinking at how Mr majestic has used some gloves to push some planets around: those gloves didn't help him in moving them, but they were keeping the planet's integrity. With this kind of thech Superman should be able to do the same.
I think his strength should stay equal to Captain Marvel. They've always been physical equals in strength.
Is it still in new52? I know Supes has punked Billy a couple times..... which is bs. Wouldn't be surprised if they made him far stronger by now.
No. There's a point in strength when it gets to be too much.

Billy landed a big punch on Superman but we don't know Billy's new-52 strength, he had two good showings against Superman and Wonder Woman. Pre-52, they were written as equals in strength.
@sanohibiki: When did I say Superman punked Cap?
@frozen: Sorry, quoted the wrong post.

I remember how in Trinity War they both landed a solid punch to each other, without clear winner (and immune to magic Ultraman stomped Black Adam, but that’s beside the point). Where exactly Superman punked Cap?
Yes but "barely." He should only be able to move the earth when he's absolutely pushing his limits and the possibility of getting help is there too.
@conradoaccorsi: yes
Superman,Shazam both moving planets in the original version, moving planets strength=superman, that was whole point
So,if superman cant move earth,he was not superman
@powerwoman: what if he doesn't move planets he's not superman what kind of logic is that
feats don't make a story smh
besides moving a planet makes no sense in the first place all he would be doing is a hand stand
besides moving a planet makes no sense in the first place all he would be doing is a hand stand
ha that would look pretty funny
@l3g3ndarypheonix: Superman is Super-man in first then have story
Super it's mean,beyond human to realize our dreams:men can FTL,moving planets stars,etc
@powerwoman: Wrong. Superman is the "ideal to strive toward" because he acts like we wish we could act. Kind. Patient. His power level is secondary.
And, in his "original version", he could not fly, nor shoot lasers, nor lift anything heavier than a car, nor outrun a car.
@kumquatodor: No,superman is superman because superman's power is crazy powerful
He can fly,we cant
He can lift tons,we cant
This is superman, always to realize our dreams,if we want to superman into big bang, then he did it
I really don't know why people say "moving a planet doesn't make sense", as if comics are supposed to do so. Thor chan shatter a planet with his hammer. Does it make sense? no. SilverSurfer can blow up a planet and can even create a black hole. Does it make sense? no. Martian manhunter can do everything. Does it make sense?no. Wally west can do everything. Does it make sense? Of course not and the same goes for Superman moving a planet, especially if he uses some tech that allows him to use all his strenght on a sinlge spot without breaking the planet or flying through it. Now i don't think that Superman should be able to move the earth easily, since moving it easily will probably lessen the drama of such a feat, but he should struggle at least a little for me. (even if for now, in comics,Superman seems to belong to the "yes, with ease" category)
@powerwoman: There is a reason why the most famous lines are "You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards.", "Our hopes and dreams travel with you", "Go make a better world", "Lois, I never lie.", "I'm always around", etc.
It is true that the powers are interesting, but why is it that Omni-Omni-man is not as famous as Supes? Why is SUPES the famous guy? Why not Galactus, or Sentry, or Spectre?
@powerwoman: Lifting ocean liners and submarines is still super, more than super, it's ultra. Superman doesn't have to lift a planet to deserve his name
