Okay, so DC has always tried to give reason behind Superman's powers, and we all know why he has what he has, all those different visions ( like x-ray, etc ), super strength, super durability, heat vision, etc.

But how can he fly? And how does he has freeze breath?

I think of it as low level telekinesis, but I think Mark Waid explained it in one of his books.

@2cool4fun: Superman wills himself to fly has always been my explanation of it. His freeze breath is simple, you can blow cold air out your mouth , Superman has superlungs, why is it hard to believe that his lungs can blow frozen air?

For heat vision, I believe it was once justified as a method for Superman to expend the solar radiation out of his system. That's why heat vision drains Superman's power the most because it's directly powered by the solar radiation necessary for his powers.

I think that in New-52 this role went to “supernova-explosion’ ability which was demonstrated a couple of times by Supergirl. Not seeing any other reason to give such ability to the beings who fueled by sun energy.

Only Supergirl has ever displayed this power though, not Superman. I think it still makes sense that heat vision draws on more solar energy to fuel its potency.

Unless Kryptonian’s abilities varies depending on their gender or Kara was genetically modified/has sun-stone crystals in her body (nothing of those so far confirmed), Clark has the same ability by default.

Clark build his reserves of energy slowly, over years absorbing filtrated by Earth atmosphere sunlight, he more or less had time to adjust to his growing abilities. Kara went from light of Rao to orbiting our sun in close orbit, absorbing massive quantities of energy. Her organism didn’t get time to acclimatize such amount of energy, to built resistance to it. So, later, after she regained consciousness, she several times expended overcharge; not that her power levels stabilized, she not doing that supernova explosion. I think as far as comics logic goes that sounds reasonable.

I think it still makes sense that heat vision draws on more solar energy to fuel its potency.

With that I'm not argue. I’m saying that supernova-ability doesn’t make sense for Kryptonians to have (it should just severely weaken them) unless, of course, this is not some new attack, but defensive mechanism – to not get oversaturated with energy to the point of All-Star Superman.

I thought telekinesis was what made him fly.

So if telekenisis is what makes him fly, should he able to use it on others like Zod did in Superman 2? Does this also explain how he lifts enormous objects that wouldn't realistically balance if carried by a human?

They say its a bioelectric force field that gives him his strength and ability to fly. There's a handbook that says when he flies or uses heat vison, he's just extendeding that force field.

how can he fly? And how does he has freeze breath?

    Depends on a writer, really.

In modern day there are several explanations for Kryptonians powers exist.

From 90’s – Superman can fly, invulnerable and superstrong because of automatically produced by his body TT/bioelectric force field. Every cell of his body produce such field around itself, that’s why Kryptonians so durable against both external and internal damage.

Freeze breath… I heard two possible explanations.

    1. Superman can subconsciously change temperature of his internal organs – from overheated to ultra cold. He inhales air; drops his lungs’ temperature to absolute zero, then exhales air.

    2. This is extension of his energy absorbing ability – not only sunlight, but also heat energy. Supes inhales air, absorbs all of heat energy nearly to the point of air becoming liquid, exhales it.

This gives a pretty interesting explanation of all of Superman's powers although it might also open up questions as to why he hasn't used the power to do other crazy things.

Idk, how does anyone without wings fly? why does exposure to radioactivity make anger a trigger emotion? why does Booster Gold go so far back in time to where he doesn't know the time of critical events? why after AvX and Dark Reign not another Civil War breakout?

@koshi_waza88: Well if he can do heat vision, I think it would be normal to raise his body temperature.

I never liked the idea that Supes ''Stores'' energy. I liked the reason they gave in MoS, that his cells drink the radiation and transfer it to his body strengthening his muses and what not.

    That makes sense.
