    Superman

Character » Superman appears in 18939 issues.

Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!

Newsarama lists Reeve's performance as one of the WORST.

Newsarama is quickly losing it's credibility these days. After a recent article they wrote quoting their thoughts on the "worst" performances by an actor in a comic book based role, Twitter exploded with anger and hatred towards the supposed "comic-loving site". While most of the performances listed are somewhat agreeable, there was one that caused a massive outrage. Apparently, Christopher Reeve's performance, in their opinion, was one of the worst.

In defense of this position we could point to his lack of much of a post-Superman resume, but the truth is now 30-plus years later with a more critical eye we simply don't find his portrayal of Superman and Clark Kent very much like any Superman or Clark Kent we know... or like, for that matter.

    Really?

His Clark wasn't mild-mannered, he was a cartoonish buffoon. His Superman far too earnest and eager-to-please for someone with the power of a god. In short, he was a mild-mannered Superman, frankly lacking in the charisma you'd expect from an actor playing a cultural icon. A more theatrical rather than natural actor, Reeve's Superman was a caricature of a comic book Boy Scout superhero and not a fully developed character

Apparently, the entire staff of Newsarama have never read a Superman comic in their life.

    And the cherry on top:

The Worst Moment: The Fortress of Solitude Luthor/Zod double-cross scene in "Superman II" is moment Reeves' broad, more theatrical method is apparent. But it's that same film's truck stop scene when a now-powerless Superman confronts the loud mouth at the counter that stands out as a wrong acting choice.
The so-very-earnest-it-frankly-hurts way he stands up to the bully only lacks Reeve affecting an old-timey bare-knuckle boxing stance and/or slapping him across the face with a white glove, challenging him to a duel at dawn.

    Thoughts?

And thus whatever credibility Newsarama had vanished in a flash. A lot of their choices are spot on but to put Reeves in the same category as Hale Berry as Catwoman and Nicholas Cage as Ghost Rider is a flipping disgrace. If it were allowed, every word in this sentance would be followed by a swear word. They wouldn't know a good Superman performance if it hit them in the face which is probably what a lot of people want to do to them right now.

the only problem i had with his superman was when he asked what he was doing he said the american way and it sounded like he thought americans were the best and being nice and helping people is being american, when superman thinks everyone has good in them and can help people if they try.

I acknowledge that you have your own opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

The way he changed his body language, the tone of his voice, the almost goofy nature was quite honestly spot on with how Clark Kent was and still is represented.

I agree. To say that his Clark Kent wasn't close at all goes to show that they've never read a Superman comic (during that time period).

Indeed, I thought one of the staples of the film was how spot on he portrayed the differences between Clark and Superman. The body language, the tone of his voice, etc.

I've never really shown interest for Newsarama's lists. Just more opinions to go with the rest of ours.

As for this subject, I guess I can see their problem in today's sense, but for the time the films were made I think he was a perfect choice.

@RScottH08: Honestly, for it's time, Superman was the first film to really modernize the superhero genre and bring it to light outside of comics. The performance of Reeve only helped solidify that.

The problem is that they're judging his performance by contemporary standards. That's like someone reading "War of the Worlds" and saying that it's the worst sci-fi book ever written because it was stupid that the Martians didn't have the technology to detect earth diseases.

Anyway, I think I can see where they're coming from. Reeve, in honesty played an amazing silver age Clark Kent. The problem was that Silver Age Clark Kent was a horrible, horrible character, and didn't withstand the test of time. His Superman? No, they're just wrong about that.

Get off your high horse. Nobody made fun of him, they just didn't like his performance. The idea that an actor should be exempt from criticism because he had an accident later in his life and remained paraplegic is beyond stupid.

I can stay at my high horse as long as I please, they did not directly but his portrayal remains as one of the iconic ones in pop culture. The world loved him as superman and the world wept when he's had that accident. He is not exempt from anything, but bashing him for something he did good at the time and pulling back their comments right after to save face (inconsistency) is just pathetic.

No one is arguing that the Silver Age in general was an idiotic time period in comics, but for what his performance reflected, it was spot on and has yet to be out-done by any other leading actor.
