If not, what is the best Zod story, in your opinion?
I don't think it is but, as of the Zod stuff I've read now, it's #2.
Character » Superman appears in 18939 issues.
Definitely. IMO he's also the most interesting villain of any CBM. His motives, what he stands for and what breaks him. His speech before the fight gives me chills

I agree. His "purpose" speech was incredible.
You know what I find funny? Pre 52 Zod was with Ursa, but now post MoS in the New 52 he's with Faora.... IMO it's an improvment
Dat Armor
He is my favorite part of the film.
IMO, New Krypton is the best Zod story. Zod plays a huge role in this arc and you can't help but be won over by him.

True. His motives are also very similar to MoS.
I think World of New Krypton, is his best portrayal.
@squalleon: I haven't read new krypton.
I do agree with you about MoS, though. Shannon was perfect for the role. As was whoever played Faora.
@saintwildcard: I highly recommend watching the whole movie at .9x or .8x speed. Makes everything seem more intense, whether it's speech, emotion, or action. The scene where Clark cries out after what happened with Zod seems even more heartfelt. The speech Zod gives before the last fight seems even more emotional. Good stuff.

This!

I liked Shannon but what I preferred about MoS-Zod was the characterization. A soldier made to protect no matter the cost. It just made sense.
You will like New Krypton Zod.
He is cunning, strategical, like MoS Zod he deeply cares about his people. But he is also ruthless with the people he consider's enemies.
Read World of New Krypton. It is a nice 12 part mini-series. Plus Superman becoming "commander EL" is priceless :P

Btw. Nice Avatar, where is it from?
I'll alway prefer "For Tomorrow" when it comes to Zod stories.
Hmm, I will have to reread it because my memory of it is a little fuzzy.
I really liked the Smallville interpretation of Zod, but I haven't seen the show in awhile. That might have been my favorite version of the character, but I really liked how he was written in Man of Steel.

For Tomorrow Zod was a beast.

Thanks. It's from Booster Gold #2 - Cold Redemption. Booster was filming a commercial endorsing a brand of breakfast cereal called Flakies...but let's just say that that particular take didn't get aired.

Ugh. The story was great, but Zod's armor is atrocious.
I really loved that as well. MoS made Zod what he always should have been, IMO.
FYI, I'm writing an extensive evaluation/review of For Tomorrow and why I think it was a great story. I THINK I understand what Azzarello was trying to say with his story. And I think it's an incredibly touching and bold narrative.
I think the first half, with the confession parts was great. The second was meh, because of the complete change in direction and tone.
@squalleon: I used to feel the same way but after reading more of Azzarello's work I decided to go back and take my time with the story. All in all I think there was a deliberate point to the changes that happen in the story.
@lvenger: Shannon's Zod is the one I want to see in the comics. My only complaint is that he was dressed in black. That's so lame, imo: far too on the nose way of saying, "This guy is evil!" I much prefer the family in. GoT that wears pink to show how badass they are (the pink be representative of flayed flesh.)
