So far with DC's 'The New 52,' we've been getting new updates and revelations in each issue of Grant Morrison's ACTION COMICS. Superman is still the same character but we've been witnessing some changes as we see his early days once again for the first time.

Since the debut of Superman, back in 1938, we have seen many different takes on his origin. There have been similarities but with all the various reboots and relaunches over the years, it's been a mystery which version we might see in 'The New 52.' Some of those questions, specifically about Krypton, have been revealed in the third issue.

    No Caption Provided

Here are five more revelations that changes or clarifies who Superman is in today's comics. There will be some spoilers for issue #3. We strongly encourage you to buy the issue to see how exactly everything unfolds. Not all will be revealed here! If your curious, you can check out our review here.

    == TEASER ==

Krypton and the Cause of Destruction

    No Caption Provided

The story usually goes with Jor-El, one of Krypton's leading scientists, trying to warn the Science Council about Krypton's doom. Jor-El did still predict the "core collapse of Krypton" but all that is irrelevant. A certain alien consciousness has made its way to Krypton, collected the planet's database and determined the planet is no longer necessary.

We can assume that Jor-El still had the ship that would take young Kal-El to a safer planet. We will be finding out more about that later.

It also appears we get a look at Kryptonian cell phones. Headband devices allow them to communicate and gives a new way for hands-free devices.

    Krypto

There's been a lot of debate over the fate of Krypto. From ACTION COMICS #2, we had the following image:

    No Caption Provided
    No Caption Provided

At New York Comic Con 2011, it was mentioned that Krypto didn't survive the trip to Earth. When Superman had been captured by General Sam Lane and Lex Luthor, the remains of a goat-like creature was shown to Superman. The assumption is this was the body of Krypto.

There was also some rumblings that not everyone at DC agreed with what was mentioned at the panel.

In this issue, when Jor-El discovers that Krypton is about to meet its final fate, we see a more DOG-like creature by his side. If Krypto was the family dog, this definitely looks more like a dog than the remains of the goat shown to Superman.

What it comes down to is we don't know for sure what Krypto's fate is. We can assume he doesn't have horns or hooves.

To add more mystery to this, when Clark was sitting at a park bench, what appeared to be a homeless person approached him with a curious statement.

    No Caption Provided

The mention of a white dog is too much of a coincidence. As for the 'ghost' watching over Clark, could that actually meant that Krypto is dead or in a ghost-like state (in other words, could he be stuck in the Phantom Zone?).

Clark's Attitude Towards Authorities and About Superman

    No Caption Provided

The Clark Kent we're familiar with is meek and mild mannered. When he is visited by a detective, he has no problem standing up to them and speaking his mind. As a reporter, he is investigating a powerful man and trying to expose him. The police are aware of the potential danger and view Clark as a troublemaker. This is far from the quiet reporter that tends to shuffle along in the background. They even tell him they'll be watching him.

As for his attitude on Superman, Clark has usually been a supporter of Metropolis' hero. When Superman is brought up, Clark basically disputes the fact that someone like him could exist. He scoffs at the idea of a superpowered hero running around saving the lives of innocents.

Since Superman at this time isn't as powerful as we're used to, he shows signs of taking a beating. Clark doesn't try to hide the fact that he is bruised up and doesn't even try to make up an excuse.

Someone Discovers His Secret Identity Already

    No Caption Provided

Superman has always kept his secret identity close to his chest. He's always gone to great lengths to ensure it remained a secret yet in a careless move, the secret is out. It's surprising how careless he was about it and we'll have to see what the repercussions of this are in future issues. (No, I will not reveal WHO discovered his secret here).

    The Birth of Metallo

    No Caption Provided

Over the years, Metallo has had several different origins as well in the Gold, Silver and Modern Ages. The common origin was he got in a car accident and John Corben's brain was put into a robotic body.

In the 'New 52,' Corben is a more noble character. While he is in the Army serving under General Lane, he appears to have good intentions. He volunteered for Project Steel, which was designed to be the Army's first line of defense against an alien invasion.

While undergoing the process, let's just say there is a slight interruption from outside forces which will result in the birth of Metallo.

That wraps up the major changes seen in Action Comics #3. It's becoming clear that we haven't seen the end to the changes. There is bound to be more on the way. We'll have to wait for issue #4 to see what else is coming.

It might also be worth noting that the 'goat' has six legs, but I do like the wolf-hound Krypto Jor-El has with him (assuming it is Krypto and not his mother/father).

i know this keeps getting said over and over, but im sure that corpse in AC 2 is not krypto, and yes more of a goat. i just noticed it has six legs too, so ya, alien rocket test goat more likley. on the note of a white dog ghost, while it could be the ghost of krypto, it could just be the real krypto following and watching over supe, i mean he does have pure white fur and can fly, so wouldnt be suprised if a man mistook it for a ghost dog.

From the look of Krypton we still don't have an answer to the question of how Brainiac could have taken them all out as we have no indication yet that they were confined to the planet for any reason and I'm worried this will be a story gap that won't be able to explain why they're aren't more superman-esque Kryptonian merchants and explorers out in space.

The outfit they put Jor-El in was horrible. It looked nothing like what Kal-El is eventually going to wear and nothing like any of the outfits we saw Lara and the others wearing. You could tell they wanted to make Jor-El look like a badass and it came off as silly because they went too far with the concept.

Krypto looks awesome however I really hope (going against the majority on this one) that he doesn't have the same range of superpowers as a Kryptonian. I can live with enhanced strength, speed, and durability (nowhere near his older levels though) but flying, heat vision and others just don't really work for me. Okay so he'll be confined to a particular area because he can't fly but I think it fits more into the DCnU for Krypto to not be as affected by solar radiation as much as a Kryptonian. Of course that's assuming he is still alive.

@Grim: The jean look seems somewhat reminiscent of the Smallville 'Blur' thing, which I guess works here with him growing into the Superman role.

I wasn't entirely a fan of the new take on Supes with the new 52, but I'm beginning to get more on board. On thing I like is the idea of Clark being a man in his own right, and not just a mask, being prepared to speak his mind and stand up for himself. That's definitely one thing I'm very much in favour of.

So the one thing that I really don't like about these books is how we already know what is going to happen to a lot of these characters. John Corben is going to lose his heart and become Metallo. The giant floating machine is definitely Brainiac. Heck, even Henry Irons made an appearance only to quit right away and now is free to start up Steel Works and become Steel. This was such a great opportunity to actually surprise fans by changing who these characters are and what they do, but it seems like they are just the same thing again.

Sounds like Brainiac to me as far as the "alien consciousness" goes, but I'm sure it is not. As for Krypto it would be nice to have him int his New 52, so why not have him come forth despite what was said earlier? Clark's attitude toward Superman is a fresh change, for I like that he's more the cynic and rabble rousing type than the meek and mild supporter. I've not read the comic yet so it will be interesting to see just WHO has already discovered his identity...I'm actually tempted to flip through the pages right now and peak. With Metallo, I'm liking how Corben has more honest intentions than he normally has been portrayed to have. Makes him a potential ally of Superman in the future possibly. Really liking this book though, I tell you!

Sure its "not brainiac". At least until issue 5 or 6 when it is revealed that Lex has been talking to Brainiac this whole time. Guess who's not going to be surprised by that revelation.

Sorry for coming across as a cynical a-hole, I really am enjoying this book, much more so than any other new 52 that I am reading.

I'm still not a big fan of these new incarnations of Superman that DC is doing but putting Jor-El back into something resembling his Silver Age outfit won points. As for Krypto he'll probably show up at some point, I really don't think that mutated goat corpse is him and if it is, then they won some bonus points for throwing out something that unexpected.

@ltbrd: Superman's costume isn't suppose to be anything like Jor-El because 1) it's ceremonial armor, not everyday wear 2) Jor-El is a scientist so that could be the guild wear.

I don't think the A.I. attack on Kandor lead to Krypton's demise. I think it really just was Brainiac stealing the city from Krypton as always. I like how Morrison has married Metallo's origin to Brainiac's attack on Earth. So far, this series has been great. The Kryptonian upper class with their apathy and decadence stands in sharp contrast to the way Superman fights and bleeds for the poor on Earth. Morrison is retooling Krypton as a place brought down by its arrogant, wealthy elite and their inability to admit their own downfall (sound familiar to something that's happened on Earth recently?). All this, and there's a good chance Krypto will return?!? This is the best book of the new 52.

@Or35ti: I'm really not a fan of doing spoilers. With these 'revelation' articles, it shows that people do want them or want to be able to discuss them after they've read the issue. Even though the article is labeled with 'spoilers,' I still can't bring myself to spoil absolutely everything.

As much as Krypto may not be "that important" to the DCnU, I have always loved that dog and feel it brings a nice boost or flavor to the books. He was always there to save his kryptonian partners, out of no where, when they were in trouble (ie: superboy vs superboy prime). I'm just against the idea of the removal of characters that have been around for so long just because DC wants to renew the universe and stay fresh.

Speaking of which, I'm sure if I read correctly but are Ma and Pa kent dead? or still alive? Because that would upset me greatly also.

I disagree with two points you make in the article:

    1) I do think Krypton is still destroyed by natural calamity, it's just that the "Alien Consciousness"/Brainiac takes advantage of this and swipes Kandor before the big boom. There's nothing to indicate it is responsible for the destruction, just that it is opportunistic.

    2) Corben/Metallo is far from noble in his goals. Much like in Johns "Secret Origin" Corben wants Lois back at any cost, and wants Superman out of the way as a rival for her affections (especially after being made a fool of last issue). He's doing it all for his own selfish desires.

They were main characters in Superboy stories from the Silver and Bronze Ages, but weren't alive for his career as Superman until after John Byrne's Man of Steel in 1987. They became major supporting cast members for Superman in the Modern Age, but before that they were almost always dead before he came to Metropolis.

I'm not even huge into Superman lore, but it totally sounds like Braniac (of his New 52 reimagining) destroyed Krypton.

Honestly I am starting to despise the DC reboots, I was a fan of Superman and the rest since I first learned to read, this drastic departure comes off more as a writer who wants to bipass established history and create his own take then anything else, from the moment we witnessed a rebellious violent Superman, to now has been a disappointment, I guess young fans like the violent bad ass types, but making Supes more amoral and dark seems like a departure that does not serve the spirit of the character at all. I'll pass on all DC titles until they go back to the characters root reality

The Action Comics reboot has taken Superman back to his roots. He's a social crusader who's not afraid to bully his villains or threaten them to get results. He leaps but doesn't fly. His strength is toned down. All of this is closer in approximation to the Superman of 1939 than the character we've been reading for the past decade. The problem I have with fans like you is you treat everything DC did from 1987 on as immutable. What you all seem to forget was DC had to erase decades of their own continuity with Crisis on Infinite Earths just to establish the status quo you're all so broken up about losing. Your argument about "established history" is complete hypocrisy in that way and your argument about "taking the character back to his roots" is ridiculous since I just proved that's what Action Comics did. Unless I missed something and 1987 replaced 1939 as the Golden Age of comics,

    @Primmaster64:

Thank you. But I think it boils down to the fact that I've had this argument so many times that I can boil my points down to a paragraph like that. I think in the future I should probably just let things go.

If it is Brainiac, I hope he has a better name and design. Big swolle muscle head isn't something he should need to be strong.
