Hey everyone! In only two days the infamous Volume two of Action Comics will hit the shelves. With all the controversy and fears of a disappointing comic, is anyone excited?
What are your thoughts on the book, will it be a success?
Which book will be better "Superman" or "Action Comics"?

Not that I've made it a secret, but I'm REALLY pumped to finally read this issue. I've argued on message boards for YEARS that Superman has needed a change in characterization close to the way Grant Morrison made him in All-Star Superman and Final Crisis: Superman Beyond. I feel like all the time I spent (some say wasted) on these debates will be in some way rewarded by this revamp. Despite the controversy, I have a hard time believing this book won't be a success. Grant has had successful and memorable revamps on Animal Man, the Doom Patrol, the JLA, and the X-Men. His run on Batman has lasted five years now and has remained a top seller for DC. He gets critical acclaim on almost every book he works on. Rags Morales is no slouch either. There will be those who will complain and moan to bring things back to what they were before (there always are), but this book will be popular and will sell regardless of their protests. I may go even so far as to say this will be the most popular run on the mainstream Superman book since Byrne's back in 1987 (and will be better than the Superman title, no offense to the legendary George Perez).

I'm glad that the marriage is over, I'm glad we'll finally get a chance to move away from Byrne's yuppie boy scout, and I'm really glad that Superman is back to being a social crusader because we really need one in this recession. In a country that has a growing gap between the rich and the poor in a time when there's less money going around than in the last few decades, we need our greatest hero looking out for the little guy. I think Superman is going to be exactly where he needs to be in this day in age. Obviously, I've put a lot of stock into this book already, but Grant hasn't let me down yet. I think we'll get a more exciting and dynamic character to read in the end. I hope everyone really gives it a chance.

@Jekylhyde14: Your post was a pleasure to read. I am new to comic books, this New 52 is essentially my gateway into the DC world, so I am entering into the Superman world with my previous experience being the animated series, Smallville and Justice League TAS. So with that being said I'm going to be reading this book without much to go on so I'm really hoping you are correct about the success of this book. I have a feeling we will see this version of Superman evolve as a person and become the "boy scout" or a matured, self-controlled hero everyone knows him to be.

I am unbelievably excited for it!!!

@The Stegman: I am aswell, but I do have some reservations about how Superman is going to be portrayed. How do you feel about this Superman's "batman" approach to crime?

Thanks! I'm glad you started this thread, and welcome to the world of Superman comics. This should be a great place to start. I think the evolution of Superman's character is really going to be at the forefront here. Grant tried to get a revamp done on Superman back in late 1999 when Superman's sales really began to sag. He and three other comic writers I respect (Mark Waid, Mark Millar, and Tom Peyer) wrote up a proposal called Superman 2000 which you can read here: http://superman.nu/theages/History/2000/

Unfortunately, DC passed on their proposal, but they came up with an interesting philosophy for developing Superman's character and planned to have his powers grow over time. I really hope we see some of this finally come to fruition in Grant's Action Comics.

Actually he is VERY much similar to how Superman was when he first came out, he was less "boy scout" and more "scare the crap out of villains" he really ddin't become the Superman we know and love today, until the Silver age due to the Comics Code Authority

@The Stegman: Wow! It's almost like the new writers are perhaps paying a tribute to Superman's early days with this revamp. This might have helped ease my negative perceptions on how they are portraying him in this book!

@Jekylhyde14: Wow, I kind of wish there proposal was passed. I would have liked to enjoy comic books earlier in life haha. I am even more pumped for this book, if their ideas have been brewing for so long.

@xScorchedx: yeah that's what i think they're doing, making him more rough around the ages since Action Comics is telling his origins stories, they will probably make him more like his nicer self in the "Superman" and "justice League" titles

I'm ready and excited. I can't wait to read Grant's take on an early Superman, and see him kick tons of ass. He looks like he doesn't take anybody's crap.

Personally I would like to see his cocky personality he seems to have in AC in the main Superman title, it feels like every time people see Superman he's been born with the whole "Truth, Justice, and the American way" motto burned into his brain since birth, so it's nice to see a more gritty Superman who's also cocky because he knows he's pretty much invincible. In a way it reminds me of Superboy in Young Justice. I think it would be more interesting to see as he learns how to be the big blue boyscout we're so use to instead of just having him BE the boyscout from the start, slowly see him learn from his cocky mistakes as he goes up against villains thinking he can pounce on them only to get his butt kicked around. Seeing Superman make mistakes and learning from them.

And from how Justice League #1 ended, I think we may be seeing that.

@War Killer: I can't agree more with your post. I really hope this is their plan. It would make for some great stories I'm sure.

I like how so many readers who are brand new or are not usually Superman fans seem to be interested in this revamp. Superman's greatest struggle in the Modern Age of comics has been maintaining his popularity (at least next to Batman, Wolverine, Spider-man, etc.). A major goal of every new take on the character is to bring in new readers. Action Comics is at least off to a good start.

Hopefully I'll see Superman with a new girlfriend.

@Nachobomber: From what I gather Action Comics is going to be shaking things up more, telling the Superman story in a different sort of way. Whereas the other book is going to be a safer choice keeping things (besides the suit) mostly the same.

As for batman all I know is that Batman the Dark Knight is going to be the most gritty. I would be interested in finding some guidance as well as to what book to read out of the Batman options.
#30 Posted by The Stegman (12913 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago - Show Bio
@Nachobomber:

Well Action Comics is sort of like his origins story, i'm assuming (since it hasn't come out yet) that it's gonna cover his journey from the farm, to the big city and HOW he becomes superman, probably more of a Clark Kent story than anything

while Superman itself probably focuses on just his adventures as Superman and maybe expanding on information introduced in action comics, they probably won't be connected too much though

as for Batman..i really don't know if they will do crossovers or not

but currently it's like this

Detective Comics- focuses on Batman, the detective, is usually told as more of a mystery story and usually introduces new, lesser known villains. it also has focal points on OTHER people in gotham like the GCPD and Com Gordon

Batman & Robin- is just that, it focuses on Bruce and his son Damian, and their adventures together

"Batman"- usually focuses on just Batman and his solo adventures

as for Batman: Dark Knight- i dunno really, it's a relatively new titles, not sure where it might go, but it looks pretty good

My favorite Bat-title is Batman, Inc. which is written by Action Comics writer Grant Morrison. However, that title is going on a hiatus until early 2012 while Grant focuses on Superman. Scott Snyder who's going to be writing Batman is a great writer who had a really strong run on Detective Comics recently so you might want to start there.

I've tried to get into Superman comics before but I was never able to; Action Comics and Justice League were two of the comics I was looking most forward to from the reboot.

#33 Posted by Comicfan47 (706 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago - Show Bio

Im picking up Superman. I do think Action Comics will be good but im on a small budget for the next few months so that will defiantly be a Trade Paperback for me. I am mainly excited for Green Arrow I have lots of faith in that comic.

#34 Posted by xScorchedx (66 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago - Show Bio
@Comicfan47: I'm picking up Green Arrow on the 7th as well, I don't know much at all about him but I hope I'll enjoy it.
#35 Posted by Comicfan47 (706 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago - Show Bio
@xScorchedx: Well it is written by JT Krul who really does know how to write this character. There is some big differences from the old series with the DCnU such as he will be in Seattle (like he was in the 90's for a bit) instead of Star City, His marriage will be erased completely and alot younger. So this will be a good start for new fans of Green Arrow, I have been a Green Arrow fan for years and am extremely excited for this book.

@Comicfan47: All sounds good to me. I'm not sure what it is but he has great appeal in my opinion, hopefully it will be a book I continue to collect.
