Not that I've made it a secret, but I'm REALLY pumped to finally read this issue. I've argued on message boards for YEARS that Superman has needed a change in characterization close to the way Grant Morrison made him in All-Star Superman and Final Crisis: Superman Beyond. I feel like all the time I spent (some say wasted) on these debates will be in some way rewarded by this revamp. Despite the controversy, I have a hard time believing this book won't be a success. Grant has had successful and memorable revamps on Animal Man, the Doom Patrol, the JLA, and the X-Men. His run on Batman has lasted five years now and has remained a top seller for DC. He gets critical acclaim on almost every book he works on. Rags Morales is no slouch either. There will be those who will complain and moan to bring things back to what they were before (there always are), but this book will be popular and will sell regardless of their protests. I may go even so far as to say this will be the most popular run on the mainstream Superman book since Byrne's back in 1987 (and will be better than the Superman title, no offense to the legendary George Perez).
I'm glad that the marriage is over, I'm glad we'll finally get a chance to move away from Byrne's yuppie boy scout, and I'm really glad that Superman is back to being a social crusader because we really need one in this recession. In a country that has a growing gap between the rich and the poor in a time when there's less money going around than in the last few decades, we need our greatest hero looking out for the little guy. I think Superman is going to be exactly where he needs to be in this day in age. Obviously, I've put a lot of stock into this book already, but Grant hasn't let me down yet. I think we'll get a more exciting and dynamic character to read in the end. I hope everyone really gives it a chance.
