So, I saw Man of Steel today, and I loved it.

But afterwards I got to wondering: Do Superman's laser eyes hurt him? Becuase whenever I saw him activate them he looked like he was in pain.

Now, I'm not sure if this is the case in the comics sense I've never been much of a Superman guy, but it looked to me that they at least cussed him some discomfort in the movie.

    Anyways, thanks for reading.

Oh, also: Can he see while he's using them?

I think the discomfort was from lack of use and it's just something Superman has to get used to. I would think he could see when he uses heat vision since he can use it with pinpoint accuracy.

In the movie yes, in the comics no (at least most of the time)

And yeah, i'm pretty sure he can see while using them in any version of the character

I'm pretty sure it'll hurt in the beginning but he'll get used to it. He can also see with the heat vision I'm sure.

@battle_forum_junkie: Hell yea! The story was just O.K., but the action was the best ever in a CBM. MOS's action has set a new standard for CBMs.

@battle_forum_junkie: Technically it's heat vision, not laser vision. But they make it look all laser-y in his films and the comics themselves. *shrugs* Whataya gonna do?

@immortal777: Yeah, I wasn't all that interested in Superman before, but watching that movie makes me want to pick up a few books like All-Star Superman and Superman: For Tomorrow that everyone keeps talking about.

Man, I can't wait to see a sequel!

@battle_forum_junkie: Because its not very good

I'd rather recommend something like birthright (which is ironic because mark waid hated the movie) or geoff johns' work such as last son (never been that big of a johns fan but i loved his superman stuff)

The earth one volumes arent bad for new readers either, the first one is kinda similar to man of steel

I don't think it hurts him, i mean he did it as a child. I think it's over whelming though, tiring.

Glad you enjoyed the film! Superman's heat vision is said to be the most draining ability. It draws a lot of energy from his solar fuelled cells meaning that it tires him out quicker. So the discomfort seen may be just be stain or tiredness.

Wow, you're late to the party, friend! But yeah, I think the discomfort might be because the heat vision drains his solar reserves faster than his other powers. But in the comics he's always been fine, he can see and it causes him no pain.

I'd definitely recommend All-Star, but if I can give another suggestion: pick up Superman & the Legion of Super-Heroes. Fantastic story by Geoff Johns, gorgeous art by Gary Frank, and an all-around heartwarming story that shows what makes Superman super.

In the movie it does. I really enjoyed that change to the character because it makes sense. Shooting concentrated beams of light that are hot enough to melt metal out of your eyes should not be as easy as breathing.

I think it really really hurts in the movies.. If I remember correctly, the veins around his eyes are showing and are also glowing when he shoots the heat vision.

Or is that only when he gives them a strong push? I don't think he showed some pain when he was heating the door knob as a child.

yeah but zod continuously did it as well. I don't know, I think it's like refocusing your eyes. and then refocusing them again. Plus I don't know if the scene of him in the artic was him getting a more powerful heat vision or something, because his eyes were glowing red there too but he wasn't shooting anything, and he shook his head and if he was uncomfortable....maybe it is new to him at that much power so it took some while getting use to.
