fadetoblackbolt's Superman: War of the Supermen #3 - The Battle for Earth review

There are thousands of Kryptonians; there's only one Superman

This was a quick read. There isn't much dialogue, just various spats of information regarding the Kryptonian invasion. This may sound detrimental, but I think it works. It adds to the hectic nature of the War.

Everyone has their parts to play this issue, particularly Flamebird, who delivers one of the most heroic acts we've seen in a Superman book in a long while. Nightwing (Chris Kent) also gets a good showing, one that leaves many questions to be answered in the future. And I am really looking forward to it. Superboy and his Metro heroes take down the Rushmore militants, looking awesome the entire time. General Lane also gives us a quick moment of fatherhood that brought a smile to my face.

Ok, now that we've covered the secondary characters, let's get to the real stars. Zod, Ursa, Kara, and of course, Superman. Sadly, there was no Luthor this issue. They all shine this issue, with Zod coming off as especially ruthless.
Anyway, last week's insanely cool cliffhanger is resolved quite well this issue, in a scene that actually brought a tear to this cynic's eye. The Kryptonians descend upon Earth, spreading massive chaos and taking down various nation's leaders. There's going to be an awesome throwdown in front of the White House next issue as well.

Zod, however, knows the heart of the Earth isn't Washington D.C, but rather Metropolis, and he and his Legion attack the city, with no heroes left to protect it.

It seems Metropolis will fall, and the Earth is doomed.

    Yeah, right.

Gates and Robinson have really delivered with this series, and even the most anti-Superman reader should get a kick out of the intense action and excitement that has permeated throughout the entire run.
The art, once again, is glorious, not a misstep to be had, and the thousands of Kryptonians flying across the Earth look genuinely ominous. Honestly, there's not much to say about the art other than, this is comic book art at its most accessible. It's not too realistic, and it's not too cartoony, it hits that nice medium that gives a real warm, clear look to the issue.

Some would say that having Superman not utter a word throughout the issue was a little dodgy, but I found it wonderfully appropriate. Superman is a symbol, and he need not say anything in order to inspire; this issue captures that ideal perfectly.

By the end of this issue, my jaw wasn't at my feet like last week, but my heart was still racing. I'm a big fan of the Man of Steel, and an entire army of Kryptonians couldn't keep me from picking up next week's installment. Not to mention that the last page is the most epic thing to come out of the entire arc.

Do yourself a favour, pick this series up, and see why Superman is the greatest hero in comic book history.

Apparently, War Really Is Good For Absolutely Nothing 0

I'm surprised to admit this, but I'm getting pretty sick of all the death in DC comics lately. Between this and Cry for Justice, the body count DC writer James Robinson alone has must be well over 100,000 and probably over 200,000. It has all become very desensitizing. After all the deaths in Star City, the destruction of so many faceless Kryptonians along with New Krypton at the start of this story barely registered.   This issue continues upping the body count with more recognizable faces. It'...

Speed review!  It is short and sweet!      We are "watching" the death of a people here.  The writing has made me feel sorry for the Kryptonians and happy that they are getting what they deserve by attacking the Earth.  But much like soliders of any planet or country they are just following the orders they are given.  Their motivation is clear.  Zod and Lane saw to that.  Destroy my planet and I am pretty motivated to kill you.  So motivation and emotions are high on both sides.  Earths heroes...
