Heroism At Its Finest
The Story:
With all the recent events that have been happening, Superman's relationship with Lois has become more and more strained. Superman is going from fight to fight as he encounters Bizarro, OMAC's and Blackrock who has recently gained an incredible amount of power providing Superman a worthy challenge. To make matters more complicated, Supergirl tells Superman that she is leaving with Donna.
My Thoughts:
Mark Verheiden takes Superman's character on a journey of self-righteousness, reminding everyone of the kind of hero he truly is. Verheiden focuses on a couple of Superman's famous qualities such as selflessness and morality.
Another focus of the comic is the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane. They're going through ups and downs within the midst of all the chaos happening. The romance added was a nice touch and heartfelt.
The only part of this comic I didn't care too much for was Bizarro's part. I'm not a fan of his character and there wasn't really much of a point to his part in the comic.
Superman's relationship with his cousin Kara is still developing. He tries to protect her to her displeasure as she's eager to help Superman in the fight. He's just barely getting to know her still when she informs him that she is leaving. Before she can further explain they have to stop Blackrock. It will be interesting to see how Superman responds to her departure.
The art is by a combination of different artists. Among them are Ed Benes and Ivan Reis who happen to be a couple of my favorites. They draw an awesome Superman and Ed Bene's covers are truly spectacular.
This is a solid Superman volume taking place shortly before Infinite Crisis. Definitely worth the read. It's well written and well drawn. All fans of Superman can appreciate this nice testament to his character.
