    Superman Proposes... But Not to Lois!

    One of the best of the 1950s Superman stories, 'The Girl in Superman's Past' introduces Lori Lemaris for the first time. It's a bittersweet love story about two star-crossed lovers, Clark and Lori who can never be together. The panel where Superman and Lori kiss under the sea for the first and last time is one of the most memorable single panels in Superman's history.
     
    After a decade of lackluster stories, this story from May of 1959 seems to herald the coming Silver Age of more substantive comic storytelling.
