COMICVINE'S TOP 100 SUPERMAN STORIES #22
Now this is more like it. While the need for retelling Superman's origin is still highly questionable, Geoff Johns and Gary Frank finally get it right in the third issue of Superman: Secret Origin. Gone are teenage evil geniuses and corny alien kids from the future. This issue tells the oft-told tale of Clark Kent's first day on the job at the Daily Planet.
Frank's art is good with Clark clearly modeled on Christopher Reeves. It keeps some of the good improvements from the past - Lex Luthor as the kingpin of Metropolis, and introduces the major players like Steve Lombard, Lois Lane, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen and others.
But it doesn't just repeat the past. Finally some improvements are added to the mix. The Daily Planet is no longer glamorous place it's always been - it's a run-down publication on the verge of bankruptcy, mirroring the reality of 21st century newspaper life. Johns also comes up with a creative way to reintroduce Metallo.
Essential reading it is not, but its' a good introduction for those new to Superman comics, and a good refresher for those already here.
