    Superman #701: Grounded Part One

"Trust Me, I'm Sure." - Superman. Writer J. Michael Straczynski begins the highly anticipate story for Superman! After the events of War Of The Supermen, how will Superman continue his battle for Truth, Justice, and the American Way? Straczynski is joined by artist Eddy Barrows on this amazing story called "Grounded." Superman decides to take a walk and focus on the 'little things' in this story line. Making enough time to help and protect the people of different cities.

    J. Michael Straczynski  creates a story about Superman thinking about the little things in life. After fighting for the earth in War Of The Supermen, Superman is having second thoughts at being a hero. From losing Chris Kent (Nightwing) in issue 4 of War Of The Supermen, to the constant nagging and pulling of the press. Superman takes a break from it all and decides to have a walk where he travels through different cities helping people with little things. Eddy Barrows' artwork for this issue is cool and seemed to work for this beginning story line. Always delivering the best drawings he can possibly do, not leaving anything left out. This isn't a story with action and violence, this story is mostly about, what Superman has done in his life as a hero! Funny things appeared in this comic. For example, Superman carries money in his cape! Who would know right? However, back to the story on hand. Being a Hero doesn't mean that he or she (as a hero) focuses on the "major things." It could also be with little things. I think this is why J. Micheal Straczynski created this story line. Showing that heroes are also here to help with minor things. J. Michael Straczynski and Eddy Barrows did a terrific job on this first issue, Superman is in good hands as his life is going to be changed forever!

While it doesn't have the action like most readers want it to have, it does get a little long. Some dialogue is carried over onto another page, however, this story is worth having.

    The Verdict

Superman will continue his walk in issue 702! Straczynski and Barrows will, (have), done a great job with this first issue. With a story like this, old Superman readers will want to pick this up, and New readers will also like this. This issue is a good jumping on point. Overall this is a 5 out of 5.

I have a theory about Superman. My theory is that the reason why so many people are put off by Superman is that he is essentially, what is called in the literary world, a flat character. He must conform to the prescribed rules of his nature, and this can make it hard to relate him. At the end of the day no matter how much Red Kryptonite is involved Superman is always going to do everything he can to save the day. But, what does that mean "save the day". After a giant battle with some crazy space...

      J. Michael Straczynski can finally have a week where he won't be forever linked for drastically changing Wonder Woman's status quo. He's beginning the new arc of Superman, aptly titled "Grounded", and if there was any indication of his preview last month, this will be a very touching issue, that I think at least, this story will be remembered fondly for years to come. While Luthor's off finding the black rings, and Kara's set to deal with her Bizarro clone, Supes is just walking across America. ...
