The Monster At The End Of This Series...

Century 28: Gods and Monsters opens with Metron finding an opening for the New Gods to free New Genesis from hundreds of years of exile. His efforts are rewarded with a mix of gratitude and disdain. Mostly from Beautiful Dreamer. In returning to Earth, The Man of Steel abandoned Dreamer and his two children, Lar-El and Vara. Scott Free joins them to defend Metron. In answer to the question, Could Darkseid really still be alive? he shows up!

Back in Gotham City, on Earth, 2725 is the year anniversary of the death of Bruce and Lara's son, Thomas Taylor Wayne. Clark joins the couple at the grave marker. A Boom Tube stargate opens and a mortally wounded Metron begs Clark to save New Genesis. Spectacularly, Metron then joins The Source.

Superman races through a Boom Tube only to find New Genesis destroyed and only the Celestial City survives. Like Joel, Lar-El despises his father for seeming to abandon them. Clark tells his stricken Dreamer that he searched for a way back across ten thousand worlds. She seems understanding. After he is greeted by Barda, they see a horde of Parademons heading toward them. He races off to fight them, but is sent back to Earth.

There, he tells Bruce and Lara that he watched as Darkseid killed the New Gods one by one. Highfather, Big Bear, Lar-El, Vara. Finally, he violently snaps Dreamer's neck. Then he sends Superman back to Earth.

Furious, Superman is reminded of Luthor by what Darkseid has done to his latest family. He is out for revenge now.

    The Good
This is it. The home stretch. This is where every thing starts to come together and all the pieces start falling into place. Failing that, this is where Darkseid has to make his move; and, both Superman and Batman have to do some thing.

    The Bad
Byrne has really amped up the villains to the extreme as far as violence and cruelty. Where else can you go with characters anymore that hasn't been done already?

What's the point of a villain that want to destroy everything and kill everybody? What's left? Apokolips is gone. New Genesis is gone. With the New God's gone, what's left in the Celestial City? I can only imagine that it would get kinda boring if it were just Darkseid, Desaad, Granny, Kanto and Vundabar sittin' around playing cards for the rest of time. Seems like there's nothing left around to rule or lord over.

Maybe the Parademons will make good company...

I'm still not sold on throwing out hundreds and hundreds of years around as if they were day.

It's almost outrageous that there are so many backup and contingency plans and ways for characters to cheat death. originally this Elseworlds universe was based on Superman and Batman aging in real time. Of course, halfway through the original mini-series, they stopped "aging" and just sort of endured. Now all the characters are just immortal and everybody lives forever. That must be the definition of the "never-ending battle". I would wonder, even if Superman were invulnerable, even his Kryptonian body would have to eventually wear down and give out. He would have to eventually pass from old age. The same with Bruce. Everything deteriorates over time. Nothing lasts forever, does it?

    The Skinny

This is a pretty decent issue. It sets up a potentially spectacular ending between Superman and Darkseid.
