razzatazz's Superman Annual #11 - For the Man Who has Everything... review

This is one of the most memorable issues in DC Comics prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths (so much so that it was made into an episode of Justice League Unlimited).  Batman, Wonder and Robin (Jason Todd) make their way to the Fortress of Solitude in order to celebrate Superman's birthday - which is not something that would happen in modern comics - and find him there trapped by the Black Mercy.  Mongul is there keen on revenge after suffering defeat numerous times at the hands of Superman.  The story takes off in three different directions - Batman and Robin try to remove the Mercy, Wonder Woman fights Mongul and Superman is trapped in his idyllic world on Krypton.  As Batman gets more successful more and more seems wrong on Krypton until the Mercy is removed and attachs itself to Bruce (also showing his dream world.)  In the end all is made right, but the resolution for Mongul is not the typical one for a villain.  Overall this is a standout issue, if only a little dated at times.

Only 4 1/2 stars ?  Glad you finally made it to reading this outstanding piece of Alan Moore wordcraft, but it's more than worthy of the full five stars in my opinion.  The very idea of Wonder Woman fighting Mongul alone, with everything hanging in the balance is worth at least 5 stars in and of itself.

@dondasch: I would have gone with five, but certain parts do not stand the test of time as well
