Superboy's First Public Appearance
For the Centennial Celebration of the Daily Planet, Superman flies around the world taking photos of the Planet's branch offices. While doing this he reminisces about his first public appearance. In many ways, this is a totally unnecessary story. Basically Superboy foils a robbery attempt by some thieves that use scuba gear to escape by sea. That's fine, but the rest of the story is about how he meets the Mayor, then the Governor, delivers a pardon to the jail (similar to the Golden Age story of Superman doing this), meets the President, foils an assassination attempt on the president, and does a bunch of good deeds for the military, charities, cities, and private citizens.
And, yes, it does read just like that - practically a list of things, panel after panel with not much point to it. It also has some irritating bits like using a toy mouse that Clark just happens to have in his pocket to feign fear and ditch Lana (who somehow is fooled), or Superboy just happening by the end of a secret tunnel that prisoners are using to escape from the penitentiary.
Curt Swan's art is good, as always, and the initial robbery part of the story is quite good. It's also nice to see Superman doing something mundane like flying around taking pictures - so for those things it gets boosted a whole star from 1.5 to 2.5 stars - still, it's great for obsessive fan types that need to know about this first public appearance, but not really essential reading for anyone else.
